4. They closed the poll already. Cheney won, but this is OK.
I don't know where in OK this station is, but I guess they figured they;d quit while Cheney was ahead.

7. What did they do? Let the Freepers Vote in Advance?
Bet me that the talking heads won't sieze on the one poll where Cheney won to say that "the results were mixed." Bet me...

8. It Doesn't Matter
It hurts me to say this, but Cheney achieved one important victory tonight: he showed that one could articulate a coherent defense for what he & the Shrub have been doing for the last 4 years. We can no longer simply make jokes about inarticulate facial expressions & whining about "hard work."

Yet, more importantly, no matter how well Cheney did or could have done, he could not achieve anything better than a draw. He might understand in expert detail every reason for every command that Shrub made: the final decision still remains the duty of the Commander-in-Chief.

Until the mid-1970s, Vice Presidents were routinely treated with disdain or contempt by the President & the rest of his staff. Should the Shrub make a decision that Cheney disagrees with, the Shrub will at best ignore him & at worst relocate Cheney to a secure, undisclosed location where his influence & power will be next to nothing -- as Cheney probably knows quite well.

This election is for the President of the United States -- not the Vice President or the First Lady.

10. You would have to be a magician
to defend what he and Bush were doing for the last 4 years.

11. Not a "Magician", the Word I Think You Want is
Sophistry.

My reaction to this debate is based on years of arguing with partisans from the other side, who seemed to be able to effortlessly cite facts to defend their opinions much as Cheney did. Looking back -- both at Cheney's performance & at my own experience -- I wonder if they simply didn't manage to lie with a straight face.

(Although later NBC claimed to have found a justification for the no-bid contract that was awarded to Halliburton: one of their reporters said no other company could ramp up & handle the expected job as fast as Halliburton. Can anyone fact-check that?)

Still, I expect the folks over on the neo-con blogs are cheering, & telling each other that Cheney said what Bush should have said. They're now expecting to see a new, improved Bush this Friday. My guess is that his partisans will claim victory if he doesn't melt down again at that debate, & victory if he appears at the third debate: but that is the kind of grading system a grade school teacher uses for her/his students, to encourage them to challenge themselves while not destroying their own self-worth.

Need I point out that we need a president whose success should be measured by tougher standards than a grade school teacher's?
