Cheney and El Salvador
Cheney touted El Salvador as a success example of transition to democracy. I thought he had a lot of balls to bring that up. Here's a great summary of the murder of the Jesuit priests in El Salvador during their civil war and a mention of Cheney's singular unhelpfulness to Rep. Joe Moakley's investigation: http://www.americas.org/item_112

"The Lawyers Committee for Human Rights alleged in a letter to Defense Secretary Cheney that the killers of the Jesuits were trained by U.S. Special Forces up to three days before the assassinations. " http://zena.secureforum.com/Znet/chomsky/dd/dd-c12-s15.html

"Defense Secretary Dick Cheney stated that there was no evidence that the Salvadoran army was involved in the murders " http://www.hrw.org/reports/1989/WR89/Elsalva.htm

Yep, real concerned about the people of El Salvador, aren't we, Dick?

1. Didn't one of Bishop Romero's killers just get charged?
I thought this week in California that one of the killers of Bishop Romero was charged?!?!?

As far as the Salvadoran Jesuits go, remember they had their brains scooped out of their heads symbolically to warn people about speaking out/thinking...Scary that Dick Cheney would bring it up.

2. Death squads and Iran-Contra...
... are right down Dick's alley, aren't they? Installing a right-wing government is El Salvador was one of Reagan's, ahem, accomplishments.

Meanwhile, the people of El Salvador continue to suffer.

Right wing to the end, eh, Dick? :grr:

4. I also observed the first elections
In El Salvador. It is true that people turned out to vote in numbers that put our turnout to shame. I do not recall any bombings. Guess this was just another untruth. Oh yes, there was plenty of bombing going on in El Salvador before that and we were helping to do it. That must have been what he was thinking about.:kick:

6. El Salvador, a shining beacon of democracy
when it's not overrun by Reagan-funded ARENA death squads dumping the bodies of their victims in El Playon.

I nearly went ballistic on my TV for that little quip.
