Doubts about Edwards win? Read Editorials in WaPo, NYT, LATimes
WaPo: Cheney vs. Edwards

If this debate mattered in part because Mr. Cheney has been such an integral part of the Bush team, it was also important as a proving ground for his relatively inexperienced opponent. Mr. Edwards has served not quite one term in the Senate, and he has spent much of that time running for higher office. Mr. Cheney was as cutting as a school principal lecturing a delinquent student on the subject of Mr. Edwards's Senate "attendance record." But if the question was whether he has the grounding to assume the presidency if need be, Mr. Edwards delivered a solid performance on both foreign and domestic policy last night. He sought to turn the experience question around by saying, "Mr. Vice President, I don't think the country can take four more years of this kind of experience."

NYT: The Running Mates Debate

Mr. Edwards is normally known for his wide grin and boyish appearance, but he was serious and tough last night. If his main task was to show that he could stand up to the older and more experienced vice president, he did everything he needed to do, especially during the discussion of foreign policy - the area that is supposed to be his weak suit. Mr. Edwards was particularly on point when Mr. Cheney attacked John Kerry as a lawmaker who had consistently voted against military expenditures. Much of the arms spending Mr. Kerry voted against, Mr. Edwards noted, was for the same programs Mr. Cheney had fought to cut when he was secretary of defense.

LATimes: Edwards Woos Another Jury

The Edwards victory was more lopsided when the debate turned to domestic policy. The Bush administration, Edwards noted, is the first since Herbert Hoover's to preside over a net loss of jobs. Beyond an irrelevant paean to education, the vice president had no response. He seemed similarly at a loss when Edwards proceeded, with Clintonian specificity, to eviscerate President Bush's record on other domestic fronts.

20. If only that was blood ...
Cheney could have used a big gulp during that debate.
He looked a little peaked. He had his eye on Edwards' neck.

13. avuncular means uncle
except for a monkey's uncle I can't imagine that sort of intimacy. it is sort of the condescending teacher or authority figure who knows all, tolerates nothing and never quite agrees with you so that you will be upset and he cool with manufactured confidence. I don't think I can listen seriously to any faux sage again speaking in that tone. He would either have to be stupid or a fraud intent more on self than the rest of the universe that rotates around him.

Funny, it was the sixties, the birthing ground of this particular wise guide, that saw the great rebellion against this very type of authority and presentation. After all these years reality confirms it as I reach that age and see the garbage for the naked BS it is. Worse if the smoothie believes it too much himself. I could tolerate a con-man a lot more. Cheney wanted to become Cheney despite all the experience of his generation. He would not be denied entry into the Major A%%hole League.

15. avuncular - yes, perfect description.
That sort of, "Oh, let me explain this to you, YET AGAIN . . . sigh" tone that Cheney had the entire time got old really quick. Edwards was upbeat and poised and calm; Cheney seemed asleep half the time.

19. Satan may very well be avuncular.
Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see wears a cloak of decency
All non-believers and men stealers talking in the name of religion
And there's a slow, slow train coming up around the bend.

3. "Irrelevant." Oh, that's vicious. LOL.
"He seemed similarly at a loss when Edwards proceeded, with Clintonian specificity, to eviscerate President Bush's record on other domestic fronts."

That's good, too. Linking Edwards to Clinton this way, very good indeed.

8. Yes indeed. Cheney did not put Edwards away. Edwards showed
that he is just as capable of taking the VP slot as Cheney. Cheney needed to destroy Edwards last night and that is something he did not do. AND, he became noticably uncomfortable when things got around to the domestic and all those nasty details about caring for the people in THIS country. At the worst this was a tie and a tie is as big a victory for Edwards as an outright win. Cheney failed----now go out and have a nice day and shout for joy all over this land. The ship of state is sinking with all rat's onboard. Enjoy.

10. Yeah, JE won, but he did so sounding more like a Republican than Democrat
you know things are pretty bad when the Democratic loyalists are cheering on a democratic VP who sounded far more like a rightwinger than a leftwinger.

Yeah, we may win all these but at what cost? You know, the things our candidates say do not just melt away into the air. They stay in people's minds. By having the Democratic ticket go up there in front of all of America and reinforce everything that the rightwing propaganda machine has been putting out for 30 years about how low taxes are better than high taxes, and how we need to build up our military ever bigger and stronger, well, we may have won the battles of the Prez and VP debates, but we lost the goddamn war.

18. That's interesting, b/c my boss was telling me this morning
that she thought Edwards was trying to appeal to the left-wing base last night, leaving Kerry to concentrate more on the center. She mentioned how her Repub husband was totally disgusted w/ Bush last week, but Edwards annoyed him so much last night that it may have pushed him over the edge to vote for B/C.
