The real factcheck.org is pretty scathing about Cheney
Once people get past Cheney's confusion about .com and .org (ha, Gore would never have made that mistake ...), they can get to this page, analysing the debate's claims. They pull up Edwards for the 'cutting combat pay' remark, and have a few minor quibbles about other things he said, but apart from that, they show a lot of lying and misrepresentation by Cheney, on the Iraq War Resolution, job figures, meeting Edwards, Iraq casualties, small businesses, AIDS, the Iraq-9/11 connection, and Kerry's tax votes. In particular, on Halliburton, they say:

http://www.factcheck.org/article.aspx?docID=272
Edwards was also slightly off when he said Halliburton paid millions in fines "while he (Cheney) was CEO." What he meant was that it paid fines for matters that took place while Cheney was in charge. And in fact, the Securities and Exchange Commission announced Aug. 3 that Halliburton will pay $7.5 million to settle a matter that dates back to 1998, when Cheney was CEO.
...

  • Iran: Indeed, Halliburton has said it does about $30 million to $40 million in oilfield service business in Iran annually through a subsidiary, Halliburton Products and Services Ltd. The company says that the subsidiary fully complies with US sanctions laws, but the matter currently is under investigation by a federal grand jury in Houston.
  • Bribery Investigation: U.S. and French authorities currently are investigating whether a joint venture whose partners included a Halliburton subsidiary paid bribes or kickbacks to win a $12 billion construction project in Nigeria.
  • Libya: Edwards was wrong to include Libya, however. In 1995, before Cheney joined the company, Halliburton pled guilty to criminal charges that it violated the U.S. ban on exports to Libya and said it would pay $3.81 million in fines. Those violations dated back to 1987 and 1990.

I'm sure the Rebpulicans will be swift to put on their website that Halliburton is under investigation for trading with Iran, and bribing Nigerians, while Cheney was CEO .. </sarcasm>

I hope the undecided voters do make it to factcheck.org - Cheney comes out looking far worse than Edwards does.

1. Yeah, and it ticks me off that the Bush Administration SEC
did not tie-in Dick Cheney w/ the wrongdoing of Halliburton while Cheney was CEO of Halliburton. Come on, get real!!

Did the SEC separate or at least try a "wall of separation" while investigating the very company run by its own executive branch Vice President?? wtf?

. . . . . . .

4. Thanks for posting
I was planning to if you had not already done so. Cheney does come out looking far worse than Edwards on the fact check score.

6. No wonder he gave the wrong URL
If I were Cheney, I wouldn't want people looking at that either. The Edwards misstatements were mild. For example, Halliburton's fines were not levied while Cheney was CEO, but for activities that occurred while Cheney was CEO -- that difference being, what?

Cheney's misstatements were flat-out fabrications.

E-mail that URL to all of your Republican friends and remind them that Dick Cheney thinks this is a good site for accurate information!

11. LOL that's funny and true!
The site has been "slashdotted" a term meaning that a heavy traffic site (like slashdot.org or du.com) has posted an article and thousands of people suddenly went there to see what's going on. Typically this kills the server, and is, technically, a DDoS attack, albeit an unintentional one.

12. That cache is out of date
I saw the front page just before the server crashed, there are, at least, three articles ahead of the "Willy Horton Ad" article on the current front page.
