Another cheney lie; very interesting one

From Atrios:

Cheney -- LIIIIIAAAAARRRR

Edwards' hometown newspaper:

CHENEY: "Your hometown newspaper has taken to calling you Senator Gone." (An archive search finds no such reference in The News & Observer.

http://www.newsobserver.com/politics/story/1705399p-7958298c.html

...Look, a mention in a weekly paper that isn't in his "hometown"
http://www.thepilot.com/weblinks/062503PilotEditorial.html

does not qualify as his "hometown newspaper". If he'd said, "one newspaper in your home state," it would have been a stretch,* but not a lie. As said, it's a lie.

*Why I mean it would be a stretch is that if Kerry and Bush were debating in Philadelphia, I don't think it would be appropriate for Kerry to say "Your policies have been so disastrous that one Philadelphia paper has said that people who vote for you will burn in hell." Now, that would be true, as the Philadelphia Weekly has said just that, but still a stretch in that for most people across the country they'd be imagining that it was the daily newspaper which wrote it, and not some irreverent weekly.

2. Poor Cheney can't help it
He has problems determining "hometowns" and "home states." He (chuckle) still thinks (chuckle chuckle) that his home state is WYOMING, fer Chrissakes! Does he really believe his own bullshit?

4. And YET ANOTHER Cheney Lie
This morning on Democracy Now! they excoriated Dick Cheney regarding his comparisons of Central America to Iraq and Afghanistan. Last night, Cheney said he was an observer in El Salvador in the 1980's when they held free elections. He alleged that 75,000 civilians were killed by terrorists when they went to the polling places. Amy Goodman and her guests went over this period of Cheney's past, when he was neck deep in Iran-Contra. Apparently, there is no evidence WHATSOEVER that 75,000 people were killed at polling places when trying to vote. In fact, the evidence indicates that thousands were killed instead by right wing hit squads. They also discussed Cheney's lies about Iraq and Afghanistan, where Cheney's lie about 10 million registered voters was taken apart like a cheap suit. Apparently, the Bush emissary to the elections in Afghanistan has been coercing opponents of Karzai to drop out of their campaigns, to the point where the opposition candidates have joined together to try to take action against this US intervention in their attempt at democracy. Democracy Now! from this morning is a "must hear" program regarding Cheney.

Edwards’ Hometown Paper Calls Him “Senator Gone.”

Apparently this is where both the charge and the the "hometown paper" error come from.

On edit: I found the same lineup of charges posted verbatim on a newsgroup on July 6.

I think it's probably something that's been bouncing around in the wingnutosphere and got picked up by the Cheney people without being fact-checked.
