the NASCAR factor
Tony Stewart(interviewed on MSNBC)
"I hate politics, I don't want to listen too it, don't want to pay attention to it" "I'm fer Bush, he supports NASCAR and understands how important it is." Asked if he thinks the fans are paying attention, "Naw, not at all. They came to see the race and they don't really care if there's a politician in the stands"

why the hell did they bother?

2. Tony Stewart can kind of be an ass at times
Don't pay any attention to him. Compare Tony with Earnhardt Jr, who encouraged his fans and crew to see F9/11.

4. Bush supports NASCAR and understands how important it is?
So I should vote for a man because he supports football and understands it's importance. It is a sport. Of course a race car driver thinks NASCAR is important. That's his job. Don't get me wrong, IO like NASCAR. I grew up on racing. I just think it's a dumb comment.

7. Yeah.. that was incredibly shallow..
.. and pretty embarrassing, actually. I know some race fans. But, on the scale of importance like: Lying to go to war which is resulting in thousands of deaths and injuries of our troops vs. Nascar. Well.. doesn't quite measure up. What a dork he is.

6. In defense of NASCAR...
I am quite well acquainted with many crews and drivers, owners, etc. and I can tell you that there is a sizable group who are very anti-Bush. Of course, the pro-Bush crowd may yell the louder, but it is nonetheless not representative of NASCAR... trust me... You'd be surprised by how many "big time" NASCAR drivers are not on the Dumbya bandwagon...

I've also been at quite a few races where I've met quite a few people of the leftist persuasion....

12. The problem with NASCAR is the image
it wants to portray...don't forget that NASCAR is almost a privately-owned sport (the France family). They want to project this "good ole boy" image and, to an extent, all teams/drivers/owners try to meet this standard. However, that is not to say that privately these people necessarily follow the leader when it comes to their personal political opinions or persuasions. Trust me on it. If any of the NASCAR drivers were to come out and say "Go Kerry/Edwards" that particular driver would probably stand to lose sponsorships and a lot of fans, so it's not in the driver's interest to do so...

Once again, trust me when I say that there are a sizable number of NASCAR drivers/owners/pit crews who are not all "rah rah Bush."

13. But the establishment is so right wing that someone such as myself...
would not be interested. The reality is, that the France family & Co would see me as being "Unpatriotic" because I am a Democrat and support Kerry/Edwards and other liberals. Also, if they are a bunch of right wingers, I would not want to be in their presence.

Of course this is is Ironic because the owner's name is "France". Maybe they should change the surname to "Freedom"?!?

9. Dale Earnhardt Junior was on 60 Minutes last week...DOH!
He said he's voting for Bush because his Daddy voted for Bush. Dur. He went on to say that he likes to be referred to as Junior. So, Junior may be able to drive a car fast, but he certainly can't think for himself.

Most recently this 30 year old pillar of wisdom was docked 25 pts for saying "shit" on TV. Turns out there is no cursing allowed in NASCAR. Being the good ol family sport of morals, integrity and values, NASCAR, previous to Junior's slip-up, had docked 4 other racers this year for cursing on radio and/or TV. Along with not thinking for himself, Junior apparently can't learn from others mistakes. In Junior's defense he said he thinks his fans really didn't care if he said "shit" on TV or not. Therefore, he's appealing the docking.

I don't think we should be too worried about the NASCAR racers and their fans...most of them probably wont vote.

26. "Little E" throw a real curve to the Billy-Bob crowd down here a few
months ago. Was quoted in an interview that he'd seen F9/11, was shocked and impressed and wanted everyone on his team to see it.

A hush went through the Nascar Crowd. Is Little E a "librul?"

If you're not aware, all the NASCAR teams are HQed here in Charlotte.

Don't you love that thinking..... "I'll vote fer em 'cause my diddy voted fer em."

31. Junior said he did see 9/11
But, he said even though the movie was impressive and he learned some new things, it did not change his mind or alter his perception of Bush. I find that interesting. I'm sure some Rove like pukiod is whispering in his ear...don't cave in, don't cave in...your fans will disappear if you say you're a Dem. la la la la

33. I was at a wedding up in Concord where Big E lived.....
and was seated by some locals. Asked the woman next to meif she was a Big E fan. The women next to me said yes and looked to be Big E's age, at 50ish. Asked if she was a Little E. fan and she said yes. I then said I'd just heard him on the radio and he was doing a charity with some buddies and heard him talk quite a long time...... I then told the lady I thought he was a good guy and I thought he was quite,,,,,,...... GET THIS....... sensitive. It's true. Unlike any NASCAR driver I've ever heard talk.... and they're all down here in dog patch. When I said he was sensitive, you'd of thought I called him a.......communist or Gay.

Makes me chuckle.

24. i'll see your rolling eyes..
and raise you a disapproving shake of the head. Your spiteful posts about "NAZICAR" show your ignorance. Have you ever actually been to a race? I've been to several, and I can tell you it's not the KKK rally that you would seem to think it is. There are people from all walks of life at these events. NASCAR and their participants are really not much different from other sports. How many baseball, basketball or football players share the same views of Tony Stewart. Should we express hatred for the fans of those sports as well? The bottom line for a lot of these guys is just that; the bottom line. They are making a tremendous amount of money, and are beneficiaries of junior's tax cuts. I would suggest that most are very apolitical, and only know what the "liberal media" tells them. NYCparalegal explained to you that those views are not shared by all of the drivers, but apparently that doesn't jibe with your preconceived notions of the typical NASCAR driver/spectator. For the record, Tony Stewart is an asshole and an idiot, but he is far from representing the views of the majority of the sport.

18. What kind of an American IS this guy?
Is THIS what our forefathers fought for? Our freedom to take no responsibility or care about anything our government does in our name?

He can't be bothered with government by the people, for the people and of the people, I guess.

But I'm sure he thinks he's the biggest "patriot" on the face of the earth.

21. I wonder how many sport celebs in general support Dems
because of the rediculous wad of money they make (does running a car around in a circle qualify as a sport??). Maybe Kerry should propose that NASCAR expand and have the drivers shoot at each other or animals running around in the infield while whizzing around the track and strippers on the side taking it off and yelling "kill, kill" and marching bands with lots of flags parading around in the stands while jets keep flying over. Nationalism is such a slobbering, guber thing. Women have progressed---ain't sure where the hell men have gone!

28. I actually went to a car race last weekend:
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 03:02 PM by mdguss
I really love car racing. Not so much Nascar, but sportscars and Indycar racing. I went to the Indy 500 and two sportscar races this year. I just went to the VIR 400 in southern Virginia for the Grand-Am sportscar series. The ratio of Kerry/Edwards to Bush/Cheney bumper stickers there: 3 to 1.

At the first sportscar race I went to (12 Hours of Sebring) there was a cardboard cut out of George W. Bush with various slogans like "I'm an idiot," "Liar," "Got Weapons of Mass Destruction." That was pretty funny. At the Indy 500, several people I talked to were firmly for Kerry. A couple were for Bush, but please don't assume that all car racing fans are a. Republicans and b. like Nascar. Not true!

As for Earnhardt, Jr. I don't know his politics. I do know he's been pretty active in a few good charities. He's a good guy.

34. I worked at the Indy 500 track while in college.............
Being at a race is an experience that the best TV coverage cannot come close to matching. There is something happening all around the track, like a 5-ring circus. I was an usher who worked the bleachers near the pits and there was always excitement. Just being with hundreds of thousands of people with a mighty roar of engines gets one's blood moving.

Contrary to what some may think, there is nothing more boring than a race run mostly under a yellow caution flag, so we don't like wrecks and thankfully I never attended a race where there was a fatality. Also, I know as many Democrat Hoosiers who are race fans as I do Republicans, maybe more so.

We also like our local boy, Jeff Gordon, who grew up just miles NW of the track. I know Jeff isn't liked by all NASCAR fans, maybe he is too good looking, and maybe just because he is a Yankee and wins!
