Blistering attack of Cheney this morning on Democracy Now
In a feature entitled "Cheney Cites El Salvador Civil War That Killed 75,000 As Model for Afghanistan", Amy Goodman interviewed Robert Parry who has a new book out on Bush. In the debate, Cheney mentioned that he was sent to El Salvador as an observer in the 1980's to monitor their elections. He stated that 75,000 civilians were killed by the terrorists to prevent them from voting. Robert Parry, who also was in El Salvador at the same time said that this is a complete fabrication and lie on Cheney's part. He said there is absolutely no evidence that 75,000 civilians were killed by rebels. In fact, he said thousands of civilians were executed by right wing death squads, trained and financed by the CIA. Apparently Cheney and the Bush family were neck deep in the shenanigans in Central America during this period and the Iran Contra scandal. US government records on this period have apparently been sealed by the Bush Administration. Parry and Rahul Mahajan tore Cheney apart on this additional lie this morning. Mahajan stated that the Cheney figure of 10 million registered voters in Afghanistan is another Cheney lie. Apparently, the US envoy supervising those elections in Afghanistan has been coercing opposition candidates to drop out and let Karzai win. These candidates have banded together in protest. It was a very interesting segment, worth a listen (available at link).

"...When asked about the situation in Afghanistan and the upcoming election, Vice President Dick Cheney called it a success in democracy and compared it to El Salvador in the 1980s. We speak with veteran investigative journalist Robert Parry about what he calls the "bloody mess" of El Salvador and Rahul Mahajan about voter manipulation in Afghanistan..."

2. Three years since the Afghan war started...What if?
shrub et al had completed that task?

they had saddam "bottled up" according to veep shrub 5 days after 911.

VICE PRES. CHENEY: There is — in the past, there have been some activities related to terrorism by Saddam Hussein. But at this stage, you know, the focus is over here on al-Qaida and the most recent events in New York. Saddam Hussein’s bottled up, at this point, but clearly, we continue to have a fairly tough policy where the Iraqis are concerned.
MR. RUSSERT: Do we have any evidence linking Saddam Hussein or Iraqis to this operation?
VICE PRES. CHENEY: No.
