My lawn sign didn't last 12 hours. I am beyond pissed.
Our local Democratic Committee just got their lawn signs in yesterday, so I had to rush down and buy some. I thought that I should grab a couple in case any freeper types decided to steal them.

Well, I put the first Kerry sign up last night and it was already gone when I left for work this morning! Screw you pathetic, cowardly republicans! I think I'm gonna need more signs, 3 aren't gonna last me till the weekend.

This happening to anyone else?

1. I haven't gotten mine yet
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 08:06 AM by demnan
But I might rig mine to make the security alarm go off if tampered with. (Mine is going on a window). So I think drastic measures are in order.

When you get another sign, do you have a dog by chance? Can you get your dog to shit around the sign, sort of a ring of protection as it were.

On edit: I meant have the dog shit on the ground around where the sign is posted. And yes, I am serious.

2. My friends had theirs
stolen (he's the superintendent of schools in a semi-Republican district in Westmoreland County; she's a school librarian), as did all those in the neighborhood who displayed Kerry signs. And there are Bush/Cheney signs popping up everywhere there.

34. Welcome to DU DHartz61061!
from a fellow Westmoreland County DU'er!

I had my sign stolen within 48 hours. I now leave outdoor lights on all night with a small note pasted to the sign which says, "Smile, you're on candid camera."

3. Suggestion: Buy some Spray-Mount and, after signs are in place
coat BOTH sides generously and the post with this substance.

For those who don't know- Spray-Mount is a spray-on artist's adhesive used to mount paper, posters, photos, etc. It goes on clear, but is REALLY sticky to the touch. When these bastards try to lift your signs, they will get STUCK to them. It will be a very unpleasant sensation, and messy, too. This stuff is aerosol -glue.

You can buy Spray Mount in any art supply shop and maybe at the hardware store- not sure about it. 3M makes it, maybe you can get some online.

I would suggest this to anyone who is getting signs stolen. Just make sure your sign is firmly in place, exactly where you want it, prior to spraying!

15. thanks- let me know how it goes.
Vaseline might curl or warp your paper- Spray Mount is invisible so the fuckers won't know what they're in for! They probably pull signs up from the post-portion, so I'd apply most liberaly there.

Good luck.

53. Stock Up BIG...
This is what a long time Democrat in a heavily Repugnican area has done and a lot of us are doing here this year.

When they rip your sign down, you put up two...they knock down your two, you put up four...in no time you're getting attention...including the local newspaper and other types. In the end the goons will realize if they screw with you they're gonna get the light shined on them. Also that it calls attention in the neighborhood to your candidate...just the opposite of what they want.

Good luck and thanks for fighting the good fight!

Nah, I am pissed wouldn't play nice any more... get a hot wire and run it to the signs. The voltage won't kill anyone, but they sure as hell won't be back. And not expecting a good shock, they might just let out a yelp that could expose the cowardly scum bastards for what they are.

The Iconoclast needs you down in Crawford, Texas right now where the "brown shirts" are threatening them with harm because they endorsed Kerry!

"Several young members of our staff covering Tonkawa Traditions this past weekend were angrily harassed and threatened that they must leave, which cut short their ability to fully do their jobs and instilled in them considerable fear for their safety. These reporters had nothing to do with that editorial. They were part-time college students working to pay their way through school and better themselves."

62. If the Iconoclast staff needs protection, find some Nam vets who just may
know a trick or two. There are some guys who could take care of things while wearing a tux and never ruffle a cuff. Maybe some could use a vacation to sunny, friendly Texas! :D I learned some fascinating skills (which I probably would never list on a resume) from a guy who was, ah, sorta into working above & beyond the norm back in the late 60s ;)

Seriously, if we stand for minor vandalism/abuse, they will only be emboldened. We need to hold our ground so they know the INTIMIDATION STOPS NOW. We especially need to hold our ground if that ground is where our homes stand. If they can trespass and vandalize with impunity, what's next?

Think it is a safe bet that there will be thugs trying to prevent certain demographic groups from getting to the polls on Nov 2. Not like it hasn't happened before in America. The junta and their minions do not revere this nation, our people, the Constitution, nor the rule of law. They will not hand power over to the majority in a gracious manner. We had best be mentally prepared for just about anything.

Starts with defending your home and your right of free speech. Give them power over either and we have lost for good. Bullies won't stop til you make them.

My ol momma used to tell us "I best NEVER hear of you startin' a fight. But if somebody else starts one, you had better finish it."
I think she might have been preparing me for this very time.

And Good Suggestion about VietNam Vet..I think maybe the Bolanos Bros could help out Leon at "The Iconoclast".

They were four brothers from Texas who were all fighting in VietNam at the same time and now they are out there for Kerry.

I heard Rick Bolanos on "The Guy James Show" last Saturday and he was riveting!

11. They want democracy in other countries just not here. They are
willing to let troops die for democracy in Iraq, but want a single government rule and thought here. Saddam was critized for holding elections where 99 pct of the people voted for him. These repugs would love to make sure that is how this election turns out. Even if it means supressing votes, purging rolls, and altering the outcome.

6. Use this experience to nail the RepubliCONs!
Train a video camera on your sign or get a motion detector alarm for it - then let the local TV stations know about it and expose the RepubliCONs' criminal activity.

Or do what another DUer did - make a sign that looks like this, THEN contact the TV stations:

Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 08:15 AM by liberalnproud
It doesn't get much exposure because I live down a private road. I was thinking of putting it on the top of the road. No less than 1 block away is a house that has huge signs for Rep "Duke" Cunningham and Viva Bush signs everywhere. At the end of the drive though where our house number sign is is another home. So if I put it up there it would look like it belongs to that house even though our little drive is our property. Maybe I could ask them if it is OK. But I live in serious *ville. Anyway...sorry about your sign. Maybe you could put it closer to your door. They may not have the cajoles to walk up to your door to jack it.

edit for clarity

9. In our county I have lost track of the number of
Yard signs stolen or destroyed....Some have lost several signs...They have spray painted them tore them to shreads and just pulled them up..One fellow was taking the 4 by 8's...he took them home and used them for target pratice....He was caught...and charged with a fellony...he had so many...this was in a neighboring county.

The Republican campaign office here called me two days ago accusing Democrats of removing their signs ....I told him we had better things to do than removing or destroying signs but I did know of two the county had removed because they were only about a foot or a foot and a half from the pavement and definately were blocking the view at these to intersections...And maybe he should instruct his people that this could cause and accident...

16. How do we all need to address these attacks on our PRIVATE PROPERTY?
Do we pester police with vandalism reports? My guess in some areas, the some members of the police might be the culprits. Not in most, but in some. But shouldn't local authorities be told about the problem each and every time it happens so they; (a) become aware of the pattern (b) aware that we are not gonna just take this shit from our neighbors (c) get enough annoying calls about it that they might get pissed at the purps and catch a few.

Also wonder if major blitz of LTTE everywhere anyone has sign vandalism occur. When home break ins got bad enough, people got neighborhood watches established. I know we only have 4 weeks, but if the word got out via LTTE, radio shows not owned by the junta, internet and word of mouth (think word of email here), maybe people might just start taking walks in their 'hoods at odd times of the day and nights. Maybe some of these cowardly piss-ants, so terrified of a fair fight they skulk about at night, would be caught!

Think of the power of community. That is basically how we have managed to pull the rug out from under the neocons (Thank you, Dr. Dean, for reminding us) this far in the fight to save the country.

And for fast solution, can a bunch of us put signs on our roofs? I still think a hot wire to the signs would be great in many areas. something like this

Bullies are slow to learn but they are learning that we are not gonna let them walk off with the country. They taunt Liberals for not standing and fighting, but they must be getting a bit afraid we will fight hard for what we believe, or they wouldn't be operating in the middle of the night. I say, time to further their education about what Liberals are made of. We need to act as a community and catch these scum bastards. They are either anti-social punks in need of reforming or real political operatives in need of exposing to their communities as the criminals they are.

If we can take back the country, and we are doing just that, we sure as hell can take back our front yards!

Trying to steal my lawn sign. My computer desk is near a front window, and two nights ago I saw a car pull up in front of my house, with the headlights illuminating my K/E sign. A car door slammed and a fat, big-bellied guy in his 40's got out (it was a beat-up Oldsmobile) and made a beeline for the sign. I was stunned, but managed to yell "HEY, ASSHOLE!" out the window. He ran back to his car and drove off.

Yesterday, the SAME car pulled up in the middle of the day. I didn't wait - I opened the front door and was halfway down the lawn when the guy got out of his car. It was hysterical - he looked PANICKED and got back inside and gunned it out of there.

What a coward - this guy was a big slob and I'm a five foot five woman. No wonder he likes his coWardly candidate.

64. You probably ran him off your place for good but he's still around.
Got any friends in the area who might like having you look after their K/E signs for a day or two ;) The coward would be REAL surprised to have you chase him off somebody else's yard! And you would be prepared to jot down the license. A camera would be good too! You could give the picture to the police along with the law (when somebody finds and posts a source) about it being a form of voter intimidation and a federal offense.

Do not let the dog out to chase the guy. My sister had a peeping tom standing on a six foot wall to get a view into her house, a fairly obvious case of premeditation hoisting himself up to that wall. Her male dog was really going nuts in the house (husband was at work that night, dog very protective of mom) She let him out and he grabbed the guy, on my sister's property. The guy sued and won to the tune of ten grand. Repeat, DO NOT LET DOG OUT.

With any luck, you'll have PMS when the jerk crosses your path again. The dog will probably learn a few tricks. Do be careful.

Folks, it is time we start up watch programs for our 'hoods. ANd everybody can walk to the polls together too when possible. We fight as hard as we expect our candidates to.

I have a Palm Zire with a built-in camera at hand, so I can snap a shot of him in the commission of several crimes, including trespassing and theft. I'm sort of hoping now that Mr. Fat Freeper comes back.

You know, as much as I hate Bush and his supporters, it wouldn't occur to me to steal a B/C sign. Maybe this coWard is pissed that there isn't a SINGLE B/C sign in the neighborhood, but lots of ours.

Do not let your dog attack him you will be sued. Call the police now and report this person that has pulled into your driveway twice! Report that you are concerned as to why this man is getting out of his car and walking around your house. Make sure you have a report on file now. If he does it again, which he will, you might be able to file other charges. Watch him, let him steal it and get the plate number. When the police come you will already have a report on file with them. He could be casing the joint to burgle you for all you know.

Tsk Tsk

Instead of making fun of this poor soul...You should stock up on some seasonal fruits and veggies in case he returns.

A fat man like that may need some DECENT nourishment and if he's driving an old crappy car he may not be able to afford to eat the "right foods" (We are after all supposed to be liberals)

I would suggest you make sure the veggies and fruits you keep on hand for him, are OVERLY RIPE.

Furthermore, don't embarrass this man, or risk trampling his dignity...just TOSS the healthy treats at him the next time you see him trying to steal your sign (in a fast ball pitch fashion of course)

I would also suggest aiming for his mouth... it will save him time and get that nourishment to him as quickly as possible!

I should have gotten a few more. They were asking a dollar donation each for signs, stickers, and buttons.

Generously (and I do mean generously), apply some of their "doodie"
in a 3 to 4 foot radius of your sign. I will be happy to donate some.
By the time, they realize what has happened, it will be too late.
A fitting reminder of their candidate, I might add.

If there is a circus nearby...elephant dung would be even more appropriate.

26. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper
saying what happened and pointing out that terrorists allegedly hate us for our freedoms.

Doing so links those who took your sign with the freedom-hating terra-ists that Bush is always blathering about.

27. Bring the sign(s) inside at night
If they are being stolen during the day, do as others have suggested and coat the signs with whatever you believe will work best for you. Personally, I would set up a motion detector attached to a sprinkler system. It works on deer. It'll probably work on those animals, too.

A much smaller sign, right alongside the K/E sign and visible only from a few feet away, might work too if it said something like, "Smile! You're on camera!" ;)

29. If you really want to get hostile
You could line the back with razor blades along the bottom, where they are likely to grab it and steal it from. sllliiice. Might even hear the scream. But it might be a kid, and that'd be a little too radical.

I think some local police need to set up some folks and put some people in jail for this stuff, then publicize it in the newspapers.

41. * in our town today
* is appearing in our town in WI today. Last Saturday thieves stole 70% of all the Kerry signs in town. They even cut a huge sign off the side of the Democratic headquarters and stole other big signs around town. This was a planned event as the one at the Dem headquarters was on cables and had to be cut off. It was too big to fit in a car so someone had a truck or van. The Repukes countered with * signs that were taken. Only problem is the street they claimed they were taken from was only two blocks long and a dead end street where no one goes so they are talking 10 signs max if every house on that street had one. We take our signs in at night.

For added fun, mix small shards of glass into grease on rear of sign, especially on and around whatever stake is holding the sign up. :)

46. Yes, happened to me within a week of putting my first one up.
That was a few months ago. So, I promptly bought half a dozen of them. One is placed close to my house (the original was near the road, so easy coward-access I guess). And a second one faces a tee on the golf course in back. These have lasted (except when I forgot to bring them in during Hurricane Jeanne... hopefully they went into some Republican's house through a hole in the roof). I've already replaced them in the same locations.

If they get stolen, four will go up.

I saw a local Dem address the issue by posting a homemade sign that read: "Kerry sign stolen -- just like 2000 election."

You might try something like that.

56. Get a few dozen signs when they steal 1 put up 2. Steal 2 put up 4. Steal
put up 8. It gets clear fast. Pound them in good make them work for it. You can make a tea of 1/4 cup red peeper to 1 cup watter and spray it over them after you get to 4. They will not expect it and it will hurt.

48. I can slip my sign on and off the wire frame; I bring it in at night when
I go to bed at about 11. I had three Gore signs stolen last time. Actually, I think bringing it in every night is probably unnecessary in my neighborhood--there are four Kerry signs for every Bush sign. The interesting thing about the Kerry signs is that they're all next to the curb; half the Bush signs are snugged up against the houses. The increase in the number of signs in people's yards (from 2000) is remarkable. I had one of the two or three Gore signs in my neighborhood, and there were probably that many Bush signs. I live in a blue state, but I still think it's interesting that so many more people are expressing themselves by posting signs and putting bumper stickers on their cars (my area is about 50/50 Democrats and repubs).

Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 01:18 PM by nomatrix
No Trespassing
Under Penalty of Law

with the codes and fines appropriate for your state.

It is important to address this issue as trespassing with theft. I know it feels petty to call the police but it starts with small things. It will then be on the record, should anything happen.

58. Here is Florida trespass law
http://www.flabar.org/tfb/TFBConsum.nsf/0/184a9fa72331ef1985256b2f006c5f6d?OpenDocument

"Even if a court would award only a small amount of money damages for a trespass, it is still important for landowners to consider taking legal action. If you suffer repeated violations of your property rights without filing an action for legal trespass, you may give the trespasser some important rights to your property. If you allow a neighbor to continually use a portion of your land as a driveway without your consent and against your will, for instance and if you fail to stop the neighbor's trespass by appropriate action, then after a period of twenty years, your neighbor could have what is called an "easement" to continue to make a driveway over your land even if you decide later to file suit or if you sell your property. In other words, by your inaction, you have given your neighbor the legal right to keep using your land. If an action is not filed within the time period the law requires, then it may be too late."

70. DON'T LET IT FEEL PETTY
to call the cops. Nomatrix is absolutely correct.

I posted this in another thread, but when my signs were stolen, I called the cops (County Sheriff's office). I specifically asked the Deputy if they want us to report these thefts, despite the small dollar value, and he said, "Absolutely!" They WANT to know what's going on on their turf.

67. I came up with a solution that may work! and it isn't messy!!
I was in a store yesterday and noticed Christmas things are already out. Here's what you do (it's cheap, too!). Put your new sign up.. but before you put it out there:

Punch two small holes on both sides of the top of the sign. Left and right upper corner. Use a picture hanging wire looped loosely, and string JINGLE BELLS on the back of the sign.. Use different sized ones so they'll bang together. Attach to the sign where you have punched the holes, by just tying the wire. Any movement to take the sign will result in a very loud jingling that will 1) wake up your dog, the neighbors dog, you, etc. 2) Stop the thief.. they aren't going to be running down the street or to their car sounding like Rudolph and the other reindeers.

However you'd like to attach the wire to the BACK of the sign is up to you.. You can attach it to the back of the frame, but however you do it, make sure that the bells will jingle if someone tries to remove them, or remove the sign! DO make the wire looped rather loosely, for MAXIMUM jingle!! The jingle bells are usuall sold in bags at craft stores, and places that sell holiday decos.

Then.. you can HO! HO! HO! all the way to our November 2nd victory!!
