Ways to protect our yard signs
It's time to fight dirty so I'm compiling a list of the ways we can make sure our signs are not moved.

1. Ring of dog shit on the ground around the sign.
2. Bear traps around the signs.
3. Skunk smell around the signs.
4. Put tip of sign in closed window - if the sign is moved the security system is triggered which automatically calls the police (my personal favorite and choice).
5. Photo cam around sign, get photo and send to police.

So get to work folks. Find a way to secure your signs and don't forget, no matter how many ways we find to play dirty, they'll play dirtier.

2. Perhaps you're kidding about the bear trap.
I hope so because that would be dangerous for children and animals and you could be held responsible for injuries to a sign-stealer, even though he or she is trespassing. A sign isn't worth someone's hand, even the hand of a thief.

3. Try this ...
Put a small sticker (like a label) on them, that says "Smile, You Are Being Video Taped". Small enough that passing cars can not read it, but large enough that someone approaching the sign will see.

Behavior can be modified by the mere thought that they might be video taped. Not many people are willing to risk being caught over a silly yard sign.

Cheers
Drifter

17. Easier to get oil of the plant on the sign
It is the oil from the poison ivy plany that is the problem. Just rub the sign on a plant and then put in your yard. Wear gloves and take care to keep the oil off you. Poison Ivy oil should be effective for a couple of weeks and could be a great way of protecting your sign.

8. Video camera trained on sign, cheap motion detector alarm...
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 08:27 AM by ClassWarrior
...replace stolen signs with ones like this:

(from this link: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x958842#961519)

And WHATEVER you do to protect your sign - CONTACT YOUR LOCAL MEDIA, ESPECIALLY TV STATIONS, and explain to them what you're doing. If you provide "good visuals" for them, there's a chance they'll show up with cameras and expose the RepubliCONs' criminal activity!!

10. Warning Bear Traps may get you sued
Even though they were in the act of coming a crime, if you injure someone with the use of a bear trap or similar device, you CAN be sued.

Better way.........go to local store and buy some fresh jalapeno peppers. Chop them up very fine and mix with Vaseline (make sure you use gloves when chopping and mixing). Smear the mixture over the points where a person is most likely to grab the sign (you may have to repeat this ever day or so).

The juice of this pepper is VERY strong and will leave a person with a painful burning sensation on ANY skin it gets on. Repeated washing with soap and water will help, but the feeling will remain for hours.

God help them if they get it in their eyes, nose, or any other sensitive areas!!!!

12. Ways to protect your signs AND get free campaing publicity!
1. File a police report, a yard sign, especially when purchased, is your property and when someone steals it you have a civic duty to your community to report this crime to the proper authorities.

2. If you have a video camera, set it up at night to record the evenings events.

3. CALL YOUR LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS AND REPORT THE PROBLEM. SHOW THEM THE POLICE REPORT. TELL THEM HOW MANY TIMES IT HAS HAPPENED. THERE IS NO BETTER PUBLICITY FOR A CAMPAIGN THAN THE OTHER SIDE COMMITING CRIMES.

15. Someone in another thread suggested
3M contact glue spray, it's clear but EXTREMELY tacky. I bought some this week for a home project. But no bear traps, please. I don't care about the feet of the assholes trying to steal a sign, but I do care about the feet of passing animals.

16. Tanglefoot pest barrier
This is an incredibly sticky goo that you can paint around the edges of your signs. It's nontoxic and very difficult to wash off. It won't hurt anyone, but it will create havoc on a thief's hands or car.

You can find it at garden centers or at http://www.tanglefoot.com/

Their site lists products for all sorts of pests; unfortunately the list does not include Republicans, so I looked up this sticky stuff under "tent caterpillars."

20. Wheat-paste the poster right on your house
In the city they use wheat-paste to glue posters on walls everywhere. Flour and water, that's it. Should wash right off later.
