Tribute to Democracy - Nov 2 National Vote Holiday |
|
How much to you think voter turnout would increase if there were a national holiday in order to vote?

Maybe 25 - 50%.
Depends who has it off, and which businesses capitalize on it to make money. I think it would be good if no stores except 24 hour stores could be open until 12 noon. Sort of like New Years.
However... my company runs a 24/7 operation and rarely shuts down even through most American holidays (Labor Day, Memorial Day) because it screws up the equipment and the loads. I think there are a lot of manufacturing companies who would still operate.

4. I hate to bring this up |
|
but the Nov 2/Election Day Holiday is Nader's idea from 1996.
I think it's a great one, BTW.

5. Louisiana runoff is a great example |
|
They schedule elections on Saturday, and turnout is improved. So a federal holiday for voting would do likewise.
But then, the people whose jobs do NOT allow them to take time off on a typical Tuesday are not likely Republican voters, so (in the words of our pResident) "who cares what they think"??

6. And why isn't our party harping on this? |
|
A day off is a BIG political winner! There's really no downside to it.. everyone likes a day off. And Americans are already some of the most-overworked people in the world. Could you imagine the browbeating that Bush would get if he were to oppose this in, say, a debate?
