Howard Dean taken to task on war stance

By Jesse J. DeConto
jdeconto@seacoastonline.com

PORTSMOUTH - Supporters of Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s campaign for president are challenging Howard Dean’s claim that only he "opposed the war from the start," but the Dean campaign dismisses Kucinich, along with former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and the Rev. Al Sharpton, as minor candidates.

Dean is circulating pamphlets featuring the bold-faced headline, "Only Dean opposed the war from the start," prompting a flurry of e-mails from the Kucinich camp to media outlets.

Dean spokesman Matthew Gardner concedes that Kucinich, Braun and Sharpton have all consistently opposed the war, but "Gov. Dean is the only major candidate to have specifically stood up to President Bush on Iraq."

Honestly, I think Dean is underestimating Kucinich here. Kerry, Lieberman, and the rest that voted for the Iraq resolution have been throwing cannons, only to have them deflected off of Dean.

If Kucinich went after Dean, that would make a big difference because then Dean would be attacked by the left. Although Kucinich might not win, it could do enough damage to Dean as to make him lose some percentage points.

And I disagree it would show him as more moderate. If anything, it would highlight the duplicity (?) in Dean's statements on a issue that catapulted him mainly to the front of the pack in the Dem. primaries.

But it may be too late.

4. What plans does Dennis have to get out of the poll cellar?
He has consistantly polled around the 1-3% mark. How can he expect to win the nomination when his campaign can't even get him into double digits.

9. Have a look at this thread,
and then consider the implications.

BTW, this is just the first of many surprises you'll be seeing from the Kucinich camp.

10. Yes, attack Dean, DK!
It's worked SO WELL for Kerry, Lieberman and Gephardt.

5. Kucinich supporters... obviously nobody gives a crap about fliers
Kucinich supporters have been pounding this same flyer issue for a month. Nobody has cared. It has gotten basically no coverage. It has no traction.

Nobody cares about fliers. Find another issue which you can get some traction on before you run out of time.

7. I have come to this conclusion.
Dean is going to continue to misrepresent himself and others. As people begin to wake up and study before their primaries there will be some and hopefully many who look at his flyers and have a "WTF?" moment. Nobody cares? We will see. DK is not the only one suffering from this dishonesty. At this point it is clear that Dean is unable to be honest and people do not like that, won't trust that and he will have singlehandedly given Rove just what he wants, a candidate (if he wins) that we can't even defend.

13. " Dean is unable to be honest and people do not like that"
I would have to agree.

Before DK entered the race, Dean was my number one. Then I was calling for a Dean/Kucinich of Kucinich/Dean ticket. I was enamored with Dean's rhetoric. Then we found out it was just politicizing. These exact actions and words from Dean have dropped him to last place.

14. You should address your thought process and transformation
in a thread post.

I'll bet that many more are feeling the same way. Dean's lies about being the antiwar candidate were used to hurt the REAL antiwar candidate and those who supported a resolution.

12. Nobody cares if someone lies and is deceitful...hmmm....maybe some people.
I guess that's where I part ways with some people. Spreading lies and rumors is pretty despicable to me.

15. I'm with you
One who campaigns that way has no integrity as a politician much less as a human being. There is a huge difference between pointing out differences in policy and attacking with mistruths.

16. Nobody cares, or the media doesn't cover it?
Those two things are not equal. When was the last time the media represented the people?

20. Posted today on Iowans for Peace listserv...
...and several other lists:

Karly Whitaker <karlywhitaker@yahoo.com> wrote:
I was happy to hear Dean take the time to point
out that he was not the only one to oppose the war in
recent debates (actually, I politely asked him to do
that the first time I heard him speak in the IMU last
spring). Unfortunately, and as we all know, not
everyone watches the debates. All that the Kucinich
campaign is requesting is that Dean's NH campaign
literature not "feature the bold-faced headline, "Only
Dean opposed the war from the start," in the service
of truth and sportsmanship.

Not only NH. As I've said before, the Dean campaign was using the same piece here in Muscatine last week.

Incidentally, Karly is the one who proposed the Kucinich "Seabiscuit" campaign last summer.
