What Presidents have you met?
or seen personally in your lifetime?

Me?
Jimmy Carter in Wabasha, Mn in 1979
Bill Clinton in Madison, Wi in 1992

I also saw Gore in Madison in 2000. He should have been president.

As for VP's
I've seen Gore and Mondale.

Met Hillary in Nyack when she was running for Senate
She was using a hall for a rally where my niece was having her baby's Christening party, which was delayed by Hillary's meeting. She was very gracious and apologetic and took pictures with my niece and her baby. Pretty cool seeing Hillary and the baby on the mantlepiece.

I saw him at the rally in the late, great Boston Garden when he arrived home to vote after the campaign.

It was a loud, chaotic, frenzied evening and I'll never forget it.

8. Just Bill Clinton- believe it or not,
he's the first one I wanted to meet. I met him during the '92 campaign and then later when volunteering at a couple of his appearances in Philly. I also met Gore before he was elected President (when he was VP).

And I have already met our next President!

11. Saw Clinton ca. 1998... Gore in 2000...
Shook Kerry's hand in 2003 + 2004...

Thrust my Nixon-mask-covered face at the window of Reagan's limo in 1984, shouting, "Four more days!! Four more days!!" I couldn't tell if The Prune saw me tho, because the windows were tinted.

Harry Truman waved hi to my mom and dad back in the day.

18. Carter in 1976, also Mondale
Carter at a rally after his debate with Ford in San Francisco. He was short and unimposing and not a terribly engaging speaker.

Mondale in 1977 or 78 or so -- he was giving a speech in a banquet hall in Monterey, CA and someone had a heart attack while he was talking. Ambulance called, guy is rushed out, I was sitting at the press table and one reporter joked that the headline ought to be: "Mondale Knocks 'Em Dead in Monterey."

23. I shook LBJ's hand...
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 05:02 PM by tomfodw
...at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. My dad worked for the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and for the AFL-CIO. There was some kind of labor-sponsored event that LBJ spoke at, and my dad arranged for me and my older sister to have our photos taken shaking LBJ's hand. I was 9, my sister was 11.

Don't remember which exhibit at the World's Fair, except that it was outdoors, in some kind of amphitheater or something. Not sure which time of year, either, except I think it was summer. I remember it was very sunny and hot.

26. Now that I start thinking about it, I feel like a groupie
Saw but didn't meet:

Nixon in a CT parade when I was 8 in 1968

Bush in Pittsburgh when he ran against Reagan (in college--went because they served free Busch beer--he annoyed me and I have despised him since then--made stupid jokes about the possibility of a female VP)

Reagan at WH during hands across america

Clinton in 2000 CT and MA and again in 2002 in CT--great every time

Kerry during primaries in Nashua NH this year

Also:

Gore in 2000--he was awesome

27. A family member on my mother's side
(by marriage not a blood relative--and he is dead now) met Teddy Roosevelt. And not just for a quick handshake either! Teddy Roosevelt did this big whistle stop thing where he toured the country in a train--this relative by marriage was a conductor who oversaw part of the trip--he got to spend many hours shooting the breeze with Teddy and having a great time with him.

It was pretty cool, because when I was growing up--he was always eager to talk about Teddy Roosevelt--which made me interested in politics. (I am a big fan of TR--who was an admittedly cool guy--but I feel very confident he would be a Democrat today.

I won't talk about my experiences--I have a few more things to say--but don't have lots of time right now.

My sister is a teacher--she had a brief encounter with Clinton at the White House--he honored some top teachers by having them come and meet him and shake his hand. She is a huge Clinton fan--but the experience was pretty generic for her--people herded in--photo taken--people herded out.

I think you get the really good encounters when the person is not president (either before or after)--or if you are lucky like my relative and you ride on the train with them for months and months...

29. John F. Kennedy..Catholic school was on holiday because he was
in town. I was in elementary school and we all got a day off to go to the Catholic High School (he gave a speech there???) anyway, his motorcade drove down the street and there were more uniforms (of the catholic school variety-not police) than there were people in street clothes and he was in a convertible and driven VERY slowly and reaching out to the crowds and shaking hands, we little catholic school cherubs got to be up close to the car and shook his hand! What a GREAT DAY! :bounce:

and got to shake Al Gore's hand while both my family and the Clinton/Gore bus crossed paths in a podunk Missouri town.

Tomorrow night, my mom's union is giving us VIP tickets to the post-debate Kerry rally. Maybe, *maybe,* if I'm lucky....

31. Ike - before he was elected President. Still have my "I Like Ike "
button. I shook his hand but was more interested in the midget that was with him - he was a cowboy and although a middle aged man he was the same height as me, about 30 inches.

Nixon - while he was President. I have a letter and a couple of autographed pics of him.

Ford - after he was President.

Clinton - before and after he was elected.

32. Bill Clinton held my eldest son when he was a baby!
In 1992 in late October, Clinton was stopping at small towns on his bus tour. We waited 2 hours for him in front of the courthouse in our little town, Hillsborough NC. When he finally arrived, he got out of the bus and headed the wrong way--away from us! An older lady off one of the other buses came over and looked at baby Ben and we told her we wanted the baby to get his kiss from the president! She assured us she'd get us our kiss! She went and got Bill and lead him right to us. He lifted Ben up in the air and everybody cheered and he held Ben for the longest time and talked to us and to Ben. He must have spent 6 or 7 minutes with us--it was so great! It was one of the biggest moments of my life! (Can you tell?)

I don't have the pictures scanned or I'd post one. . . .

Excited about it all over again!

St Louis, we were waiting on the same flight. I was only 12, the SS guys cornered of a section and wouldn't let anyone near him. I walked by and said hello he stopped reading his paper and said hello and asked if I was waiting for the late flight. He seemed OK .

37. Kennedy, Nixon, Raygun
and Carter. When Kennedy was running for office his headquarters was about a half mile from my house and at some point he paid a visit to that headquarters here in the Los Angeles area, I was just a little girl but still remember the thrill. I saw Nixon many times cause my family was active (moderate) repugs (my mother ran some of the headquarters), also met Raygun many times when he was Governor here. Carter did a town hall meeting in my city and I went to that and shook his hand. :-) Unfortunately I never got to see Clinton.
