The "Glamour" of Area Code 310
I read this and shook my head. This just plays into the stereotype that people in L.A. are status-conscious, shallow, and vain.
--------------------------------------------------------

The Prefix Is In

The area code ‘310’ has the ring of wealth and glamour to many. A plan to overlay it with 424 is pushing phone customers’ buttons.

By Rong-Gong Lin II, Times Staff Writer

To some people on the Westside and in the South Bay, "310" is more than just an area code.

It's a geographic marker — one that many associate with wealth, glamour and the beach.

"It stirs up feeling of 'Ah, Ooh.' You always have great expectations," said Larry Steele, who with his partners recently christened their new Santa Monica restaurant 310 Lounge & Bistro. "It's a hot name."

1. 310 also rings compton and so on.
I'm not buying into this.

3. I saw that in the story
But did you also see that the original plan was to split the area code, let the West Side keep 310, and give the new code (424) to the South Bay.

Typical, isn't it? Even with f#ckin area codes, people find a way to segregate from those who they deem as "undesirables".

5. In my opinion, the south bay is better than the west side.
Palos Verdes is the best place in LA. Nothing wrong with Compton, but it doesn't fit in with the author's conception of what "grand hot stuff big money is"

My humble area is still 714, one time big deal OC area code (until 949 came along)!

2. When you have several thousand . . .
. . . or more dollars worth of printed materials, an area code change can be really expensive. I've had a 310 number for years. No glamor in it for me, but I'll fight the change cause it will cost me a bundle.

The current plan is to OVERLAY 424, so you wouldn't have to change a thing as long as you keep your current numbers.

Duh.

6. Same dynamic happened in Manhattan with "646"
When they started bringing in "646" as a supplemental to the classic Manhattan "212," nobody liked the idea. Now it's more accepted.

8. I'm a 310'er
This whole mess with area codes piss me off.

We have tons of are codes in LA. I'm on the boarder of 310/323. West Hollywood is a small city, yet just past the La Cienaga is where the area code changes.

I don't know why it has to been so complicated. Cell phone, pagers, data lines should have long time ago been given a different area code.

Ours cell phones are both 323. The main reason I picked it, was if we call each's cells from the house it's not a toll charge. The number assigned (cell numbers) in 310 were toll changes that showed up as "Inglewood" which is a toll from our area.

Shit .... give me back the good ol' 213!!

I think out of all the numbers I dial on a regular basis one or two are in my area code.

9. I'm cooler than all y'all- I'm a 626er!
I never understood the big deal about area codes- unless your business has to reprint materials. That would suck.

16. When I first lived in California half of SoCal was in 714
Only L.A. was 213. 714 covered all of San Diego, Orange, Imperial, and Riverside Counties IIRC.

Down here 619 used to have some panache. That went away when La Jolla got switched to 858. :D
