Arnold - Candid Talk on the Party Line

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-donors5jun05,0,7671231.story?coll=la-home-headlines

(Robert Salladay's the reporter on most of the Gropinator articles...this one is on the front page and although it highlights
the perks of his big donors with one or two monthly conference phone calls with Arnold, it's a one-sided piece quoting his people.

Let Robert we want Coingate covered too...as well as other state fundraising.

Candid Talk on the Party Line
Major donors are given an unfiltered channel to Schwarzenegger's office for strategy sessions.

By Robert Salladay
Times Staff Writer

June 5, 2005

SACRAMENTO — When wealthy contributors write checks to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, they often get a few canapes and a drink — and a secret telephone number that grants them access to his closest advisors and even the governor himself.

Twice a month, donors can become insiders' insiders — invited to participate in conference calls featuring information about Schwarzenegger campaign strategy that his political enemies would love to have. In turn, donors who dial in can give the governor advice.

In the latest such call, a few days ago, Schwarzenegger's media expert, Don Sipple, outlined a strategy "based on a lot of polling" to create a "phenomenon of anger" among voters toward public employee unions. Firefighters, police officers, teachers and other state-paid workers have become the governor's harshest critics this year.

"The process is like peeling an onion," Sipple said, describing a multi-step plan for persuading voters that public-worker unions are "motivated by economic self-interest" instead of "doing the best job for the state."

10. arnold wanted the teachers
back when he was pushing his after school initiatives. Spoke at CTA State Rep meeting, used teachers in his ads for the initiatives.... Now, we're special interests...and he wants to break us up. Had most teachers behind him, all the way.

WHY isn't this information being more widely publicized ? It was on the bottom of page 7 of the Orange County Register today--Of course, I know that's probably good for the Register, but ..........still !

3. I thought those first couple of paragraphs were pretty damning
both for the access and the planned public employee union bashing.

4. Give it your best, Sipple...
When Arnold loses the next election you'll be looking for another job.

Phenomenon of anger? People have been nearly rioting in the streets whenever Schwarzenegger makes a public appearance -- all over the state. He has to go in the back way so he doesn't get pelted with tomatoes.

Doesn't get much angrier than that.

5. Make Issue
Democrats in California should make an issue of this. People should not get access to the state capital by giving a certain amount of money. To give people a private line to call him is just ridiculous. Democrats should make a really big fuss about this.

8. Sipple's "phenomena of anger" agenda describes the Republican agenda
pretty succinctly...here is the state model for a Rovian end-justifies-the-means approach to politics.

11. Actually, those ads are pretty stupid
And I'm sure that what Arnie calls "the special interests" are ready to pull the trigger on some nice ads that counter his baloney ones now running. Plus, Arnie kind of shoots himself in the jackboot at the end of his spot, when he says "Tchoin me een refohrmink Kuhleefornya" or whatever that gibberish line is. Dude's a roid-addled cartoon character, if roid-addled Karl Rove meat puppets can be cartoon characters.
