MONTEREY -- A national environmental group Monday announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers of two endangered sea otters shot in Monterey Bay during the past two months.
The two otters were found on May 7 and June 12, one near Pajaro Dunes, the other near Del Monte beach. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Special Agent Ed Newcomer cautions that they could have been shot miles away.

These are not the first otters to be killed in the area, according to Newcomer.
"Sea otter shootings have been an ongoing problem in the Monterey Bay area over the last two years or so," Newcomer said.
The endangered sea otters are protected both by federal and state law. California's sea otter population is currently estimated at 2,800, according to wildlife officials.
