Sonoma County Humane Society swamped by pit bull sterilizations
Humane Society swamped by pit bull sterilizations
Tuesday, June 28, 2005

By MARTIN ESPINOZA
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

The Sonoma County Humane Society is being swamped by requests from pit bull owners who want their pets spayed or neutered, a direct response to recent high-profile attacks by the breed.

About 100 people recently signed up to have their pit bulls sterilized for free, an offer made by the Humane Society in the wake of the attacks. Although 80 such operations have been scheduled, the organization says it has only enough money to perform 40.

Bonnert said Humane Society officials expect about 400 pit bulls to be spayed or neutered through the summer if the demand persists. That could cost the nonprofit $50,000, she said.

Bonnert said each spaying or neutering operation costs an average of $125.

Donations to the Humane Society's Pit Bull Spay/Neuter Fund may be sent to P.O. Box 1296, Santa Rosa 95402.

1. Sounds good to me!
These dogs have been bred to have a genetic predisposition to aggresion and a body designed to kill. No matter how well you raise them, or how gentle you are, there is always the potential that they will go into attack mode, especially when met at eye level by children. You wouldn't try to raise a wolf as a pet would you?

2. Well, a friend of mine has a wolf hybrid
He's nice to kittens and kids. If she breeds him, I'll happily take a pup if I live someplace I can have one. :) She has two pits too, one is agressive and not allowed around kids (she didn't raise him, she rescued him from neglect and abuse but the damage was done) and the other is a sweet old overgrown lapdog.

Pit mixes worry me more than pit bulls, but that's probably because a pit/rottie (whose dumbass idea was that, anyhow?) tried to take my arm off.

I worry that if the responsible owneres are all spaying and neutering the only pets left will be the badly bred and poorly raised ones that cause the problem in the first place.

Who were bad in their previous lifetimes.
