Question for you CA ppl over what a Repug friend said to me today
He said the teachers and prison guards wanted their "yearly" 8-10 raise. Do the teachers and prison guards really get this type raises every year.

TIA.

3. Teachers
holds much responsibility in the foundation building of the next generations. I think they are a very neglected profession. Investment for the future hey. When is it too much? Scary if it is too little.

4. Don't know the answer to that, but, whatever anyone may think of
Gray Davis, he took good care of public employees AND their pensions. Schwarz, by contrast, has packed the public employees pension commission with badass corporate sharks, and wants to loot salaries and pensions to pay for the huge debt that Enron and other Bush Cartel criminals put us into.

Teachers, firefighers, police and other public employees DESERVE the salaries and benefits they get--unlike the Bushite freeloaders, thieves, spinmeisters, traitors, global corporate brigands and robber barons, and mass murderers who are running our country, and whose little weenie versions are now running the state of California.

-------

The answer to the stink in Washington DC--and in California-- is restoring our right to vote, by throwing Diebold, ES&S and brethren out of the election business NOW--or at the least achieve some measure of election transparency with paper ballot backups, no secret programming code and strict auditing. The only place where we can get that done is in state/local jurisdictions, where the authority over election systems still resides, and where ordinary people still have some say. Don't let the powers-that-be silence our voices on election reform! See the DU Forum "2004 Election Results and Discussion" for information and action ideas:

9. Ask you friend to provide proof of their statements.
If they can't, they are just repeating the fox memo of the day.

I'm a teacher and that is pure bullshit.

10. I am a teacher in Bakersfield
I read that Repukes in the SF area thought teachers made TOO MUCH money at $77,000 after 25 years! Teachers in SF had to organize a group to fight for affordable housing in the city because they had to comute such long distances to teach in the inner city. Are the Repoops insane?! Just goes to show: Republican'ts want ALL the money with a slave labor force serving them. We MUST fight their intentions of buying California right out from under our feet and turning all of us into their butlers.

Go CA Dems!!!!!

16. 77K Does Not Meet 28% of Salary for Mortgage Ratio
Let's see. . . 77K after 25 years service with home ownership prices teetering one million and up these days in San Francisco. Yeah, teachers are really raking it . . . not!

12. all part of Groper's plan of targeted anger at Unions
they have an initiative to block labor contributions to political campaigns. Corporations , carte blanche unions , shut up. All part of the plan

13. let me clarify something about labor in California
The prison guards have NO friends in organized labor in our state. They are a band of opportunistic thugs who contributed tons of $$$$ to, of all people, peewee wilson. Their little pact with the devil enabled the union busting wilson to ram through his massive prison building program, which created more over-paying jobs for them. The guard's huge donations enabled peewee's infamous (& largely) failed campaign against working people in my state.
I personally was involved in the training of UNION construction apprentices. Commonly, problem students were told "Young man, if you don't get your act together, you will end up working in a state prison as a guard". That should give you an idea of the respect shown for their gang.

17. The guard's union did negotiate a 35% raise over five years
And it went through our dem legislature very quickly and was signed by davis. This crooked union has had Duekmajian, Wilson and Davis in their pockets. In the meantime, the rest of us state employees haven't gotten squat!

15. We Wish!
It's up to each individual district to determine how COLA is to be allocated, if at all in providing raises--which are usually 2% if a good year--not even close to 8-10.

18. Arnie and his cronies are feeding a lot of crap to make people
think that the teachers, fire fighters, police, nurses, etc. and their unions are 'special interests' and just being greedy.

While I am not a teacher, I have friends that are and others that work in the education field. One such friend told me she has been attending retirement parties left and right this past year since Arnie has been in office. People are getting out now while some of their benefits are still safe.

It's sad--we are losing some good, dedicated educators.

The thing that really disheartens me and out right pisses me off about Arnie and what he has done to education is the fact that he is villifying our educators, without acknowledging the very special challenges they face in our California classrooms.

He didn't grow up here and attend our schools. His children attend private schools. He has no vested interest in our schools or their programs.

19. Prison guards, maybe.
Teachers are taking cuts and pay freezes.

But while Repukes hate 'learnin', they love the prison guards.
