THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE
Poll shuffles pole position
*Survey funded by Marilyn Brewer puts her at the top of the race for Rep. Chris Cox's soon-to-maybe-be-vacant seat in Congress.
Former Newport Beach Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer's support of abortion rights and stem cell research, combined with her fiscal conservatism, make her the leading candidate to replace Rep. Chris Cox, according to a poll released last week by Public Opinion Strategies.
Cox has represented Newport Beach in Congress since 1988. He was nominated June 1 to head the Securities and Exchange Commission and is awaiting confirmation by the Senate.
The poll, commissioned by Brewer's campaign, asked likely voters in the 48th Congressional District questions about several political issues and a list of possible candidates that included Brewer and state Sen. John Campbell, both Republicans who are seeking the seat; Democrat John Graham, who said he might run, and former Reps. Bob Dornan and Jim Rogan. Dornan has said he's in, and Rogan has said he's out of the race.
A memo regarding the poll's findings said Campbell's odds will be hurt by his vote to allow illegal immigrants to get in-state tuition, and 50% of those polled support abortion rights, as does Brewer.

Reached by phone Wednesday, Campbell discounted the poll as "ridiculous." "The most recent election in this district, I ran last year and I won with over 60% of the vote," he said. "Her most recent election, she ran in 2000
and she finished seventh."
