Feinstein needs to go for CAFTA vote! |
|
many senators and represent ives who sold us out need replaced, but thanks to california's liberal/progressive nature, this may be the best chance to take out a cafta traitor in the primary and get a strong enough candidate to win in the general
maybe californians should start shopping around - you've got barbara lee, jerry brown, bustamante, and my pick, warren beatty, to name a few
i think a lot of us would pitch in to get another DINO replaced by a democrat

2. Warren Beatty would be my choice also, and since past cocaine |
|
and alcohol abuse don't seem to be an issue, Warren just might get through. He certainly has the guts to stand up to anybody and if he does have "special interests" they would probably be in the entertainment industry and they get by just fine without Wash help. Feinstein really does have to go.

10. Anyone who has spent time, $ on DiFi campaigns, tell her no more! |
|
Let DiFi know that she has callously cheapened the state of California by capitulating and undulating before the corporate toilet. She is now no better than Arnold and deserves to know that! This latest betrayal has truly impassioned the working people of California to find someone much worthier of being California's senator. DiFi is dead to me, evermore!
Barbara Boxer as the senior senator from California works for me.

At 72, I so hoped she wouldn't run again but there IS that war on (that she voted FOR) and there's still m(b)illions to be made.
Barbara Lee is a definite possibility. Jerry Brown: forget it -- no meaningful support. Bustamante: Flushed his political career down the tubes by urging voters to vote "yes" on the recall and "yes" for Bustamante. Warren Beatty is an interesting thought --it seems the pea brains in this state LOVE to elect actors for governor.
I would like to add Maxine Waters to the list of possibilities. She'll never do it, of course, but I think she would made an AWESOME Senator. I'm not sure if anyone remembers but during the Clinton Witch Hunts, she absolutely KICKED ASS on the House floor. She basically called out every one of Clinton's accusers and every one of them cowered. She's female and Black and bore incontrovertible witness to the lunacy of it all and they couldn't say a WORD (all in the name of political correctness, don't 'cha know).

I resigned from the e-board last year. I know this group. Sycophants all the way -- one of the many reasons I got out of politics and registered OUT of the Democratic Party. They'll rubber stamp her and, as usual, order everyone to march in lock-step or else they're not "real" Democrats. :puke:

... but want to keep her in line for a possible shot at the presidency in 2006/2007 if a then Democratic House can get the bums at the top impeached!
Hey, how about Stephanie Miller! :) She's got political roots (her dad William Miller ran with Barry Goldwater in 1964) and lives in L.A.! I think she and Barbara Boxer would make a good pair!

24. I actually think free trade is good for our hemisphere. |
|
Surprise, surprise. Some of us are Democrats who do want to see an end to the begger thy neighbor protectionism which the rich countries have been using to empoverish the poor. How can poor countries in our hemisphere develop and meet the basic needs of their population without us allowing their products access to our markets? The only jobs which are put at risk by this bill are textile jobs but if we do nothing China will take all of those with in 5-10 years. American textile workers making $5.25 per hour just can't beat Chinese workers getting paid $0.25 per hour no matter how hard they try.
Our choice now is do we let China have all of those jobs or do we try to spread them around a bit? I say if the US can't keep them then let's at least make sure Central America has a fight chance. The bonus is the Latin Americans almost exclusively buy US cotton and normally import US made fabric so we could at least keep those jobs. The Chinese have a protectionist system designed to promote the US of Chinese grown cotton and Chinese made fabric.
If we were serious about stopping sweat shops and trying to help American workers then we'd be campaigning against China's obvious abuses and it's artificially low currency instead of trying to keep Central Americans down.

26. I'm not a Roberts fan either. |
|
But I do support her on CAFTA. The reality is the Central American states are to small with to small of a population to seriously effect the US economy, however, this free trade deal will mean millions of people in those countries will be able to live a slightly better life then before. Over the long run they will experience a higher compound growth rate which will improve their standards of living and help cement Democracy and the rule of law in our neighborhood. As a secular humanist how can I not support this? Especially given that the impact upon the US is bound to be slightly positive instead of the vast negatives which the ALF-CIO has attempted to paint it as.

Obama, and the other DLC Dems are the problem with the Democratic party.Either you sell out for the corporate agenda or you fight it.
CAFTA was immoral for the other countries involved, forget about us.It outlawed generic drugs for the poor of Central America, among other moral crimes.
Democrats must stand for morals, period.

NAFTA did not raise the standard of living for Mexicans. It did push millions off the farm and into city slums by underselling Mexican corn. It also brought genetically modified corn to Mexico which has contaminated the corn supply. These so-called free trade agreements are free exploitation for big corporations.

30. What are you talking about?! |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 07:47 AM by Oerdin
NAFTA doubled Mexico's growth rate and halved the inflation rate in Mexico. That alone will result in an improve in living standards over time and we haven't even counted the big increases in employment. The main reason rich country farmers can out compete poor country farmers is because the rich countries cheat by massively subsidizing their farmers with direct cash payments from the government. The reality is that third world countries have only have three things they can use to grow their economies 1) export raw materials 2) export agricultural products 3)Use their large labor supplies to attract foreign owned factories.
#1 is a notoriously unstable businesses with prices booming and busting on a regular basis so it isn't a stable way to build a national economy. #2 would be great if it wasn't for the rich countries subsidizing their farmers and causing farmers in poor countries to lose their shirt when the market price of crops ends up being less then the cost to plant the crops. #3 only works if the poor countries have access to rich country markets other wise the protectionist measures block exports. I really am very confused by half of the unthought out positions I hear people say regarding free trade on this board. People here say they want to help the poor but the policies of protectionism and support for unfair subsidies are the single greatest causes of poverty and unemployment in the world today.
We can't have it both ways. Either we stop pretending to care about poverty in Latin America and reconstruct the Smoot-Holley tariffs or we push for freer trade and the end of unfair farm subsidies so we can slash the poverty rate in our hemisphere.
