I saw 'Keep Abortion Legal' protesters in Torrance today!!!
About 12:50p.m. in Torrance we saw women with 'Save Roe' and 'Keep Abortion Legal' signs. We honked and waved in support, but were on our way to an appnt. and couldn't stop to talk.

After the appnt., I eagerly drove back to the intersection hoping to talk to some of them and find out what organization they were with (if any), but they were already gone...:(

Anyone heard about any Pro-choice activism going on in southern California this weekend? I'd really like to find out who this was, thank them and offer to help them with any efforts in the future!

Here's to hope that I find them...
:toast:

1. I had to look at your profile (or read further down in you post) to get an
idea of where Torrance is. Your news is good, but I was rather hoping to find you were in some very red place like Mississippi or Utah. LOL! Hell, I can dream can't I?! Here in NYC it's the other side that takes the abuse. I like the bumper sticker I saw the other day that said, "Keep your rosaries off my ovaries!"

4. That's a great bumper sticker--Very cool!!!
I understand your desire, what you said made me laugh though.

While we are a 'blue state' you wouldn't believe how many pockets of right wing bullshit there are here. :banghead: It's really frustrating.

Torrance is interesting in that we are surrounded by the beach areas. Hermosa Beach is very blue! Redondo Beach was once blue, but sadly it seems the money has turned it red. Manhattan Beach--lots of money, pretty red with a pocket here and there of blue (but I could be wrong about that). Up the hill in Palos Verdes Estates, can you guess? LOL!

9. this description is right on...
While Torrance may have more registered dems than reps it's not by much and the "decline to state" group is rather large in Torrance. I did a lot of phone banking to those decline to state folks for the late Mike Gordon last fall.

This fall I will be working diligently on the special election, Torrance's three open school board seats (I chair the Torrance Teachers Association PAC), the open 53rd Assembly district run-off, and the local ballot initiative attempting to do away with the Personnel Commission for the schools.

I find it VERY interesting that a pro-Roe advocate would be out in Torrance.

12. Thank YOU for the work you do for Democracy in Torrance!!!
:applause:

What was Mr. Gordon's stance on Roe and abortion? Did you make any progress when you did the phone banking w/ the decline to state group?

I have to get involved with the pro-choicers in Torrance, even if it's a small group. Maybe I can help it grow...

16. you may want to hook up with...
the Torrance Democratic Club if you haven't already. Some of the members there can help you out even if you don't join. They meet the 2nd Thursday of each month at Torrance Municipal Airport. Meetings start at 7 p.m.

The calling evidently helped some. While Gordon did not "win" Torrance, he was less than a percent off of Hill's numbers. It was the liberal Venice that put Gordon over the top. Thank goodness some folks didn't buy Hill's negative smear tactics. It was a horrific race. Now that Hill is not in the battle it looks like Lieu will have to duke it out with Mary Jo Ford and/or Paul Nowatka. Ford has stated she will spend up to $500,000 of her own money to win. Nowatka serves on the same city council that Lieu does. So it will be interesting.

Was there a large group? Hi, Bliss!

:hi:

on edit: i wonder if the fact that some Catholics were knocking on doors on my st. had anything to do w/ that demonstration. I, born and raised Catholic, have never heard of Catholics proselytizing door to door, ever. My husband, who saw them first, told them I wouldn't want to talk to them! NOT TRUE!! I ran out to see if I could find them but they were gone. They left some info about our Lady of Guadalupe but not anti-choice stuff so maybe just a coinkydink. They were from the parish where my daughter was baptized and I wanted to tell them how disappointed I was w/ the Church as it is now.

3. Maybe it was a coincidence--weird though, wasn't it?
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 09:05 PM by bliss_eternal
Coinciding with the day Pro-choicers were protesting?

I'm sorry you couldn't make it there, and I am sorry I wasn't on their mailing list to know they would be near by. I have to sign up for that.

I'm checking my schedule to see if there is anyway I can go on Aug.24. I hate driving downtown, heck I just hate downtown but I would like to help--and be in the company of these awesome women.

edited to add, thank you SO much for letting me know who it was! I wish I had known, would have loved to been there with them. It was a small group, only about five or six people. But enough to get some honking going! Wooohooo!

10. Local Dem called re: Ted Lieu

I told them to get strong, stay on message, that we all were sick of weakness in Dem. leadership. Want to have word about PNAC and DSM out there !

He recruited me to work ( I said i could stuff envelopes etc ) AND he says they can pick volunteers up!!! That works for me and one way to get involved.

11. Very cool--Congratulations!
It's funny that you bring him up. I saw his commercial last night (late) and wanted to look him up on-line to see what his platform was--got busy on-line and totally forgot.

So, I'm glad you brought him up here. Glad he's a Dem.

Did I hear correctly that the current officials in Redondo Beach are Repubs?

13. what channel was Lieu's ad on ?

i don't know about redondo beach politics much... will have to pay more attention.

i spent a lot of time at city council mtgs last summer and was impressed w/ Lieu's sharp questions.

again, though, my husb and i will vote for different candidates.

oh, well, my daughter will vote for Lieu.

i got mad at him re: the war tonight and left him at the market and walked home. 1 whole block big deal. he as much as TOLD me that he never reads anything i send him. classic case of cognitive dissonance. The proverbial Good German.

14. Trying to recall which one, it was either Nick at Nite,
USA or Comedy Central. Definitely one of the Time Warner cable channels. Sorry I can't be more precise, those are the stations I was watching, just not sure which one it was.

Gosh, yorkiemommie--I'm SO sorry about your dh. That must be tough. Were you aware of his political leanings prior to getting married? He must be a good guy(besides his politics), or you wouldn't have married him. ;)

Until we do away with the electoral college, you can take some solace in the fact that your votes pretty much cancel each other's out.

Was he pissed off, having to walk home the block?

17. Yes, RB mayor...
Mike Gin is a Republican -- as was his run-off opponent Gerard Bisignano. The Democrat that I know, Kurt Schmaltz, didn't make the run-off.
