11th CD - Pombo Vs. who???
the dccc recently endorsed the dlc candidate Steve Filson to take on corrupt republican Richard Pombo in 2006. As someone from the district, I completely disagree with this choice, not only because I don't care for the dlc or their style of "moderates," but because there is a better and truly progressive candidate who actually has grassroots support, had dfa support last time, and did decent last time with a last minute campaign. Jerry Mcnerney is the candidate I believe we should support, if you're in the district vollunteer for him, even if you're not and you can afford to and would like to support a progressive over a dlc'er against a corrupt republican in 2006, in a red district with a good chance of an upset please donate to and support jerry mcnerney - visit his website at:

, also, tell the dnc, dfa, and others to support Mcnerney over Filson.

1. Do you really think we can bump Pombo?
Every district analysis I've seen has him cemented in place for as long as he wants to stay. Demographically it's an R district, and even many of the Dems in the areas are farmers who support him (Pombo's family have farmed this region for many decades, and are well respected in that community).

Has the growth in the Tracy area shifted the demographics much in the last few years?

2. yea,
i think pombo is in real trouble. Ofcourse it's gonna take some money and some hard work, but it's very possible and for a number of reasons.

I'm from that community where pombo is respected, that town, a red town in a red district. Kerry won last time, mcnerney with a flawed and last minute write in campaign did better against pombo then anyone else, and suprised a lot of people. This city, get's bluer by the month, the bay area moves here for cheaper (but hardly cheap) housing, the dynamic has been changing. Pombo has also been getting a lot of negative publicity with regards to his ethics, conflicst of interests, and corruption as well as disagreements over policy in the press and in letters to the editor daily. He's still got his base -big business and social conservative republicans, as well as pombo family supporters, and they are a powerful family, but our base has been growing, our grassroots has been growing, and pombo's ethics troubles continue to pile up, and as delay and abramoff and other who he has ties to and has donated to, he will continue to feal that heat. Mcnerney will and has called him on his corruption, and that's what is needed.

3. the redistricting gave him more East Bay conservatives
and that's helping. Tracy area isn't red as it used to be because of the SF invaders but the gerrymandering helped protect Pombo. His new territory used to be Tauscher's (D-Alamo) and there was much wrangling about where to draw the line without including Tauscher's town in his new district. Tauscher now has a substantially more Democratic district then the old 10th.

4. -update -email the dccc, dfa, dnc;
tell them either put mcnerney up on their website or take filson down. They're now claiming it's not an official endorsement, just 'highliting' of candidates. It's an establishment power play and without regard for the democratic process, Mcnerney is the one who has a grassroots base, and did decent with little last time.

also email dfa and the dnc asking them to support him;

5. I heard McNerney speak at a DFA meetup in Marin. I asked him a
question about the influence of the DLC and he said that 'the DLC is dead.' Well I hate to say I told him so but .........

That's ok. At the next meetup I'll talk to one of his campaign people about it. Don't worry I'll motivate them. LOL.

Jerry McNerney declares for the Democratic nomination for the United States Congress in California's 11th District
TRACY, CALIFORNIA, OCTOBER 12, 2005 -- Jerry McNerney today announced that he is running for the Democratic Party nomination for the United States Congress in California's 11th District in 2006. Over 100,000 voters chose McNerney over incumbent Republican Richard Pombo in 2004. McNerney has now assembled a large grassroots volunteer campaign including activists from Democratic Clubs in San Joaquin, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Morgan Hill as well as volunteers from outside the district.

Defining his position McNerney said "We need to step up to the plate and invest in America much as our parents and grandparents did so we too can hand down a nation to our children and grandchildren that is secure and prosperous. We can do this by investing in education, by promoting clean energy innovation and conservation, and by providing affordable healthcare for all Americans. The best thing we in this district can do to secure the air we breaths and the water we drink is to unseat Richard Pombo."

Commenting on conditions in the district, McNerney listed "congested and decaying highways, levees that have recently failed and more that are about to fail, air pollution that is among the worst in the nation, unemployment that is twice the state average, and an educational system that needs serious attention."

When asked about the Republican incumbent Richard Pombo, McNerney answered "He is one of the most powerful men in Congress but this district has been badly neglected. Richard Pombo is not only ineffective but he's seriously corrupt and his corruption hurts us and the nation."

Rallying his supporters McNerney went on "Because of Pombo's actions every day more voters in the district join the McNerney Campaign. We will be victorious in both the June 2006 primary and the November 2006 election, and Richard Pombo will be defeated. That is why I am running for the US Congress in the 11 th District. Thank you! I pledge to work hard as your Congressman, not
only for you but for all our fellow Americans and the future for our children."

Pleasanton residents Jerry McNerney and wife Mary have three children, all graduates of UC Davis. Dr. McNerney is a noted clean energy technology expert. He decided to run for congress after a 2004 telephone conversation with his son in the USAF discussing why there was not a

Democratic challenger to Richard Pombo. With only grassroots support in 2004 McNerney assembled a campaign. After the election his supporters refused to give up on unseating

Congressman Pombo. Today the Congressman is weaker than ever before, he no longer flies under the radar of public scrutiny, his poll numbers are down, and the number of voters who are angry with him and his policies are growing with each new headline. McNerney and his supporters are confident that this race can be won.
