Mammoth Remains Found In Sacramento County
Elephant-Like Animal Roamed Area More Than 100,000 Years Ago

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Crews from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District have discovered the remains of a mammoth -- a lumbering elephant-like animal that roamed what is now southern Sacramento County more than 100,000 years ago.

The exact location of the discovery is not being revealed because officials don't want people disturbing the site.

The fossils were discovered in the path of a pipeline that will feed a new SMUD power plant near Rancho Seco.

When the fossils were found, the pipeline project came to a halt.
