ELECTION 2005: Governor keeps S.B. visit quiet

10/12/05

NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER

Invitation-only meeting part of effort to boost four ballot initiatives
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Santa Barbara today for a Town Hall meeting -- except very few locals were actually invited, much less informed of the event.
...
The Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce confirmed receiving a somewhat cryptic phone call Monday afternoon, offering invitations for up to 10 members to attend the forum at an undisclosed location Wednesday morning. The Goleta and Carpinteria Valley Chambers of Commerce received similar announcements.
...
On Tuesday afternoon, none of the organizations would say specifically where or when the meeting would take place, only that they were to refer all inquiries to the governor's office.

Not until after 5 p.m. Tuesday did the governor's press office make a formal announcement of the meeting, billed as a "town hall," starting at 11:30 a.m. at MarBorg Industries headquarters on North Quarantina Street. The office did not specify if the governor would attend other events while in town.
......

So, Girly Man Schwarzenegger is afraid of the public...hence the stealth campaign to rustle up support for his initiatives.

If you can go....PLEASE do. I know it's short notice.

Union members from Santa Barbara IAFF (Fire Dept.) will be there.

2. You're right, you can't put ANYTHING past them...
..they stoop lower than we could possibly imagine.

Here is what he's pushing to a select few, his initiatives:

...
Event attendees, who will be allowed to ask questions, were reportedly asked to bone up on Propositions 74, 75, 76 and 77.
Supporters of the propositions say that cumulatively, they will improve the state by bettering its crop of teachers, giving public employees more say over their money, reining in the Legislature's spending capacity and making elections more fair.

But the governor-backed ballot measures have also rankled many. Mr. Schwarzenegger took office in a near-landslide 2003 recall election but now, if recent polls are any indication, he faces a a majority of voters who are dissatisfied with his performance.
....
Opponents say he's broken those promises and is hurting the very people he pledged to protect. "Prop. 74 affects teachers, 75 affects public employees and 76 affects students," said Kathleen Modugno, president of Santa Barbara Democratic Women. "I see this as a dismantling and a tying back the hands of the middle class in California, who are the ones who brought (the state) where it is today."

...

If you have time, please make a call, email or fax his office to express your opinion. We have to let these assholes know we just won't put up with this clandestine crap.

I called his office earlier and was told that his appearances are all very well publicized ahead of time (a lie) and that if I have a problem with it I should call his Scheduling office at (310)664-9002...so I did, no answer.
I had to post this in the GDPolitics forum too since it isn't picked up in the "latest" threads in this CA forum anymore and I was hoping to catch any local Californians who "might" be able to make it at the last minute.

Several union people I know were able to attend and protest but since it was such short notice I couldn't go...have to pick up a child from school. That's planned too. They make it virtually impossible to protest by not letting us know ahead of time.
Needless to say, I'm enraged at the "secretive" nature of Arnold's photo ops. He's just like Bush...hiding from the voters and hand picking his audiences. The article further went on to name a local merchant....Crispin Leathers in downtown Santa Barbara. He was invited but declined to state his position on the initiatives. That's how the Ripoff Republicans operate on a local and national level. All actions are performed in secret with lovely pictures of the selected attendees later with an accompanying story about how well received the particular politician was. All lies.

I don't know if any media outlets will pick it up...I'll be getting a first hand account from protesters later. I'll post what I ascertain.

4. A friend sent out an e-mail blast to her lists that morning
Alas, I didn't pick up my e-mail until that afternoon. Still, Herr Gropenfuehrer had a nice little greeting committee, from what local media reported.

George and Arnold: girly-men who duck the public!
