Simon drops out of race for state treasurer in '06
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/10/27/BAGHGFEI2G1.DTL

Bill Simon, the Republican candidate for governor in 2002, has pulled out of next year's contest for state treasurer, saying he needs to spend more time with his family.

The decision "came only after a great deal of soul-searching and prayer,'' Simon said in a letter to supporters. "It was not a political decision, but a personal one.''

Even so, Simon's announcement made plenty of political sense. When he jumped into the 2006 race for treasurer last year, he was looking at facing low-profile Democrats such as state Sen. Joe Dunn, D-Garden Grove (Orange County), Assemblyman Dario Frommer, D-Los Feliz (Los Angeles County), and John Chiang, a member of the state Board of Equalization, for the open seat.

3. I was so impressed w/ John Chiang.
He spoke @ the state Dem convention last spring. He was great! Very at ease in front of a crowd.
