CA DUers - Please Vote on Nov. 8
I am a teacher. I'll admit that I have a lot at stake in this election. I am rabidly against props. 74, 75, & 76. The Governor is now using our tactics, i.e. teachers in ads, etc. trying to cloak himself in the working man/woman's robes. Just remember, his agenda is not part of a grassroots uprising from within the ranks of public workers, it's bought and paid for by national right to work advocates and corporations like Chevron.

Regardless of how well or poor the Governor's "reforms" are polling, he's counting on low voter turnout. He's counting on his base showing up and our base not -- because we are angry he's even holding this special election, because we are the "sometimes" voters, because he's trying to sink us by bringing in Washington political staffers who are going church to church and pushing his agenda tied to Prop. 73 (the parental notification proposition). How do I know, I've witnessed it firsthand. I was the loan nay in a sea or yeas at a recent church political rally. It was really scary.

Please show up on Nov. 8. Or apply to vote by mail by Nov. 1.

3. Thanks, gang...
I was lucky enough to precinct walk with CTA president Barbara Kerr last weekend, and I'm organizing my own precinct walk this next weekend, the last before the election...

Thanks for all you do, and may we turn out the larger crowd to vote down the Governor's so-called reforms.

7. I will vote
if only to sink the neocons in my city council race, who are trying to drive out two moderate incumbents.

I'll make sure that all the Ahnuld props go down in flames. I am worried, however, about Prop 73, which will surely gather lots of support from the conservative immigrant communities. They may pull the same crap they did on Prop 22 five years ago.

8. That's how the Repukes GOTV
It's shrewd and playing dirty, but the Reds put some prop on the ballot that works up the conservative christian base...they come out in truckloads to kill abortion and gay rights, and then vote us back to the 1950s with the rest of the props. It's a spooky thought too appropriate this Halloween night.

I'll be phone banking with my hubby tomorrow through next Tuesday. I'll post a photo or two of us workin' the phones sometime this week.

10. Dems should have put a healthcare for pregnant women
-- free pre-natal care -- on the ballot. That would bring out women voters to vote against Prop. 73. Besides it is absolutely essential for the future of our children that every woman have access to topnotch healthcare (including dental care) during pregnancy. We could save a lot of problems and money later if we provided that for every pregnant woman. European nations do that.

11. plan to vote at local polling place
and vote against all the Schwarzendummie's propositions. Got some message on the answering machine re: 73, which I simply erased. I checked the Cal Chamber's recommendations, and then took the opposite suggestions (CalCoC=yes, my vote=no).

18. Election Observers? Rules?
Is anyone else signed up to be an election observer?
Tomorrow for the first time I have signed up to be an "election observer". I tried to search election code to see what "election observers" did, but the only reference I could find was to observing the absentee ballot procedures. I received 2 pages from the local registrar of voters - the first page is a letter anouncing that I am an "official" observor and the second page is a list of what observers can and can't do.

Some of the "can't do" things seemed a bit odd so I called the Secretary of State's office and the local registrar of voters. The local registrar said the list of do's and don'ts came from the Sec. of State's office, but the Sec. of State's office said it was up to the county officials.

Are they making it up as they go along?

Do we have any way of comparing notes between counties/precincts to see what other "election observers" have been told? And is anyone compiling reports from observers to see if there are any systemic problems?

Oh BTW - even though the election code set procedures for observing absentee ballot procedures, when I asked the local registrar, all the absentee ballots have ALREADY been opened and separated from their signed envelopes and tallied. So the only thing to observe is when the polls close they punch out the number from the machine. No way at that point to check signatures or anything. Wassup with that?

oh.. and SoonerShankle... wassup with the CHURCH POLITICAL RALLY?? Doesn't that sort of violate that silly church/state thingy? And would that maybe invalidate the reason they have tax-free status?

But... glad you are hanging in there with your church. If being the lone nay gets you down, you might want to see/join the "network of spiritual progressives". http://www.spiritualprogressives.org/

19. CODEPINK sent out guidelines for Poll Watchers & Observers- EVERYONE DO IT
Please don't forget to get out and vote this Tuesday! CODEPINK LA, the Peace & Freedom Party as well as California's nurses, teachers and union members have recommended to vote NO on props 73-78 and YES on 79 and 80.

Also...

Did you know that we can go INSIDE polling places as OBSERVERS! (Sec. 14294)

There has been lots of discussion about the offensive Diebold machines, but not much lately about all the other 'glitches'. Voter disenfranchisement, intimidation, last minute polling place changes, long lines, names missing from the roster, etc... So if you can make it to be an observer at your neighborhood polling place... the important point is end of day, grab a good book, (eat something, you will be there late), a friend and go to your polling place at around 5PM.

The following was taken from the LA County Registrar's instructions to the official poll workers.
Following that is the protocol for closing up. Print it out and take with you so you can make sure what you see what's supposed to be
happening. Watch carefully. Be like a fly on the wall and report back any 'irregularities' to Sarah (310) 204-5674 (leave on msg machine).

*POLL WATCHERS AND OBSERVERS (the following from the registrar's instructions)
In addition to those officially designated by political organizations as "Poll Watchers," anyone may observe the electoral process at polling places.

Poll Watchers may look at the Roster of Voters as long as the voting process is not delayed. They may not at any time handle voted or unvoted ballots. Only voters and Pollworkers may be in the area of the voting booths or the Ballot Box. Only Pollworkers and persons signing the Roster may sit at the table used by the Board. Poll Watchers may be present before the polls open and after the polls close and throughout the voting day.

Cooperate with Poll Watcher requests as long as they do not interfere with the normal voting process and do not violate the Elections Code.

In your Election Guide & Checklist you are instructed to post a single copy of the Street Index. You are also instructed to draw a line through the name of each voter who has voted on the posted copy of the Street Index every hour up until 6 p.m.

This is required by California State Elections Code (Sec. 14294) and assists political campaign representatives and/or members of the public in knowing who has voted. Campaigns use this information in their "Get Out the Vote" efforts. Please keep your Street Index current and cooperate with those who are seeking this information.

If you get there before 5, ask to see this list and count the number of people who have voted so far. Save the number and call it in to Sarah (213) 804-7824 -leave message precinct number, number voted out of how many and time of day. If you can and are so inspired, stay until the polls close and observe the way the polling place is closed. Click here (http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=52688613&url_num=2&url=http://www.codepinkalert.com/downloads/ClosingUp.pdf) for a pdf of how the polls are regulated to be closed- so you can truly be in the know and ensure this election is handled correctly. We are the people, and it is our responsibility to watch the elections closely and carefully.
