Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown jumped back into politics Thursday after only six months out of office, filing papers to run for state insurance commissioner in 2006.
Papers setting up the "Willie Brown for State Insurance Commissioner" committee were turned in at the secretary of state's office in Sacramento along with a statement declaring Brown's intent to run for the office.
Brown wasn't answering calls Thursday, but even his friends and political allies were shocked that the 70-year-old attorney and longtime Assembly leader was making plans for a statewide campaign.
There weren't even any rumors in the capital that Brown was planning a comeback, said Richie Ross, a veteran Sacramento political consultant and lobbyist who served as Brown's chief of staff in the Assembly.
