Socal, Torrance/So Bay DU'ers--what's up with Ted Lieu?
Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 08:17 PM by bliss_eternal
I went to Daily Breeze.com to look up something unrelated and found this...

Torrance's decision on replacing Ted Lieu cited as Brown Act violation
The city attorney noted that several residents were allowed to make comments.
By Ian Hanigan
Daily Breeze

The District Attorney's Office has accused the Torrance City Council of violating the state's open-meeting law, saying council members voted multiple times to fill a vacant seat without allowing comments from the public.

In a three-page letter to the city dated Dec. 29, county District Attorney Steve Cooley says the council was in violation of the Brown Act on the night of Oct. 18, when Rod Guyton ultimately was picked to serve the final months of Ted Lieu's four-year council term.

City officials have denied any wrongdoing, and no legal action is pending. But the district attorney's Public Integrity Division, which conducted the inquiry, says it plans to monitor the council to ensure the seven-member panel complies with the law in the future.

Anyone heard about this? What gives?

Please excuse my ignorance. I don't pay as much attention as I should to local issues--the Daily Breeze consistently pisses me off, so I avoid reading it.

it has links to other blogs too. i don't agree w/ some of those other blogs but they do give insight into what's going on here.

http://worstmayorever.blogspot.com/

thanks for bringing this to our attention, bliss, as, i only click on the online versions for a second ( read the article about Delay ), and even tho we get the weekend editions, i don't read them. DH does.

but, but, but John Bogert quoted me in his article about the 'war on christmas' and we had a nice email exchange also.

imho walker backed lieu so that he could get guyton on the council. the mayoral/ cc campaigns are going to be nasty this year but i do not know who i am going to vote for. i DO know that i will vote against every cc incumbent, tho, and am going to thoroughly vet everyone i vote for ( including checking them out on newsmeat.com, as i did w/ the school board). lieu is going to have to run again this year to secure his assembly seat & will need all the campaign help he can get. come join us, it's FUN, you don't have to phone bank, I didn't, and they feed us well and often, lol!
... you might also check into any homeowners' associations in your part of town. now that all the HOAs are linked, there is a lot of info being shared.
feel free to pm me.

edited for punctuation.

2. Thanks yorkiemommie!
Always good to see you! :hi:

Let me know when they start the work to support Lieu.

I don't blame you for not looking at the Breeze--the right wing spin in it gets irritating. One of the reasons I never buy it or read it!

John Bogert wrote you? How cool! I hope he isn't a flaming freeper--but if he was nice to you, that's what matters most.

Talk to you soon!

4. Oh please do!
I've been rather upset about that one, myself. Torrance is far from predominantly white. How so many in this community can forget what that man was and what he did--irks me to no end. Many of the people that live here would NOT if it weren't for what MLK, Rosa Parks and the brave people of the civil rights movement did.

One does not have to be black to have benefited from civil rights and all that came after it. Affirmative action wasn't just a black issue. Many of the benefits of affirmative action helped asian, latino and female applicants across all walks of life in a variety of situations. It would do the residents of Torrance some good to be reminded of this fact of life, though I'm not at all sure it will help their 'entitleed', ungrateful butts to see things any different at all...

:grr::mad::grr: Go get 'em, yorkiemommie!

On a brighter note, very glad to know Bogert isn't a freeper. I may have to read the paper--just for him.

Oh and one of the Daily Breeze advice columnists pisses me off to no end, too. But I think it's nationally syndicated and probably isn't directly their fault.

yep, every year i get mad about MLK Day here in Torrance, might as well say something after living on this street for 18yrs.

if not for the civil rights movement, I, and half of the people on this street would not have been allowed to live here. ( that argument always shuts my dh up ).

mona charen is nationally syndicated and appears in the breeze. grrrr.

edited to add that the League of Women Voters needs new members in this area. It is this group that compiled the report on housing and traffic in Torrance. ( just in cast you have some extra time on your hands )

6. The Daily Sleaze...
As much as I dislike the editorial content of the Breeze, I do try to skim it daily in order to know the 411 on local issues. Ted Lieu has so far done a great job in Sacremento. He has worked hard in the past few months to reach out to stakeholder groups in the communities he serves. The Torrance City Council is another matter all together. Replacing Lieu has been nothing but a huge political game. Just like replacing Gordon with Lieu was an ugly political mess also -- talk about Democrats eating their own...

As for the Breeze's editorial pages: the editorial page is the work of the editorial staff of the Breeze (I'm sure with direction from Copley), while their opinion page features a plethora of nationally and locally sindicated writers. Most of these writers lean right, but Maureen Dowd is featured regularly. Even the Breeze has to try to Fox-News-It by attempting to be Fair and Balanced...not...

8. Yes, he does...
have to run again. He was finishing Gordon's unfulfilled term that expires this year.

I will be happy to work for Lieu's campaign again.

Are you part of the Torrance Democratic Club?

10. Besides CC and Lieu's seats...
George Nakano is running for Debra Bowen's state senate seat (she's termed out) and Bowen is running for Secretary of State. So it will be a busy fall for Torrance/South Bay Democrats.

For more 411 on the Torrance Dem Club or other local Dem Clubs visit LA County Democratic Party.
