WASHINGTON - Rep. John Doolittle turned down repeated requests from reporters Monday asking him to explain why he wrote letters in 2003 on behalf of two Indian tribes that had hired Jack Abramoff's lobbying firm, including one letter that appeared to go against his long-standing opposition to gambling.
The fresh controversy emerged at a sensitive political juncture for Doolittle. As secretary of the House Republican conference, he and other House leaders face possible challenges to their posts as early as Thursday from reformers bent on cleaning house in the wake of the Abramoff lobbying scandal.
Dennis Thompson, director of the Ethics Center at Harvard University and author of the book "Ethics in Congress," said Doolittle's letters to Norton on behalf of the Indian tribes appear to point to a closer connection with Abramoff. And he said the letters fit an Abramoff pattern of supporting one Indian tribe or faction while undermining another.
