Congress of Vigils
Dear Vigil Activists: The CONGRESS OF VIGILS has called a POST-ELECTION MEET-UP for this SUNDAY, NOV. 7th (details below), inviting vigil activists to consider how best to pursue opposition to the war, and work for peace and justice generally, in the post-election world. Each possible scenario (Kerry wins, Bush wins, a contested election, a stolen election, or...) requires analysis of the conditions we face, assessment of the public's response, consideration of possible strategies, and real efforts to work together to change this country's policies. The Iraq and Afghanstan wars continue, the Patriot Act remains law, U.S. economic policies sustain their assault on millions of working people at home and abroad, and racial/ethnic/gender discrimination still guides the cutting edge of America's policies. In other words, our work goes on, no matter who is president. I believe the Southland's neighborhood vigils are among the more successful movements of this period, providing repeated examples of how possible it is to reach, engage, educate, and activate new people in the community, in the struggle for peace and justice. We also have set a great example of how possible it is to organize in a grassroots, decentralized manner, with initiative and decision-making rooted in a diversity of individual members and communities, while also networking in ways that encourage communication, collaboration, and connection between those members and between those communities. All this has happened because of the wonderful work of our neighborhood vigil activists, upon which we can continue to build. That is why I am encouraging all vigil activists to come to the November 7th Post-Election Congress of Vigils to help explore our options. Everyone's voice matters, and everyone makes a difference! So please, help spread the word, and urge any activists who have participated in neighborhood peace and justice vigils and related activities to attend. And thanks, to all of you, for all you do!
