San Diego: Soledad Cross to become National Veteran's Memorial
Our two winger congresscritters slithered it into a huge spending bill in the dead of night. I haven’t composed an LTE yet; I need to wait until I quit instinctively typing four-letter words.

Congress acts to save cross

Reps. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, and Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Escondido, inserted the designation.

The City Council ultimately will have to decide whether it wants to give the land to the federal government or continue with the current plan to move it.

Philip Paulson, an atheist who has continued the legal challenge, declined to say what effect Congress' move might have on his lawsuit. But he did comment on the political developments in his first public remarks in years.

"Jihad Jesus Republicans need to understand that the separation of church and state has kept this country from getting into religious wars," Paulson said. " ... If God was powerful, there would not be a need for the government to go in and force a religious agenda on nonbelieving citizens."

James Hartline, a Christian activist from San Diego, had a different take on the latest twist.

"It's just really gratifying that citizens could prevail in a very difficult battle," he said. "It just shows what perseverance can do for anybody if you just step up and keep on believing that God is on our side."

1. this ticks me off
And here's some more bad writing, or bad knowledge, or something. Just bad:

"By its action, LiMandri said, Congress was not unconstitutionally endorsing religion because it intended to honor veterans in the same manner as the crosses at Arlington National Cemetery."

Except Arlington doesn't have crosses:
