Initiative would limit city revenue

By KELLY DONOVAN/Staff Writer

BARSTOW -- An initiative that would limit the city's revenue has garnered enough signatures to be on a future ballot.

Political activist Pat Aleman collected about 200 signatures from local voters for his initiative, which is based on a sample initiative that a state Libertarian Party leader wrote.

Aleman had originally tried to get his signatures in time for the initiative to be on the Nov. 2 ballot, but he missed the deadline. When he started collecting signatures in May, the word from City Hall was that the initiative would have an "adverse impact on city services."

On Monday, city spokesman John Rader wasn't ready to denounce the initiative again, noting that the City Council has a new member, Joe Gomez. He said the new Council will need to take a position on the initiative.
