I'm elected!
I'm now a delegate to the CA state Democratic convention and an officer (secretary) of our local Assembly District committee.

All, I encourage you to get involved and do this if it's not too late in your area. As a delegate, I'm told to expect mail and lobbying from everyone running for office at all levels, plus to get to meet the candidates and hear their speeches at the convention.
You can also attend County Central Democratic Committees, so you have the opportunity to voice your opinion to many influential people.

As a local officer, you have some say-so in selection of candidates, or at least which ones are deserving of funds and support. You can suggest resolutions for consideration at the state level.

Here is my new statement that I'm adding in letters to all of my elected officials:

I am a delegate to our state Democratic convention and an officer in our local Democratic committee. I intend to make sure that voters in our area know how you vote on this critical issue. Please don't let us down!

We have the power--if we just learn how to use it.

7. It's easy to win a seat on the committee.

I first heard about this through Democracy for America (Dean's group).

Some of the committees don't even have as many people running as there are open seats.

In our case, there were 12 seats and 14 people running.

There's no cost, except $15 to become a voting member of your Assembly District Committee (at least that's the fee for us locally). I passed around a short bio and made a statement in which I pledged to support progressive values and electoral reform to be sure all votes are counted. In fact I've been a media spokesperson for VOTERR, a group dedicated to this. Only two other people brought prepared statements. The rest ad-libbed their introductions. I'm proud to say I got the most votes of anyone there, and the others who stressed progressive values also got a lot of support. Those 2 people not picked as delegates are still alternates, so if anyone gets sick, they come, too.

As for becoming an officer on the committee (Secretary), that happened on the spur of the moment. The existing secretary wants to retire, hasn't found anyone willing to run, and talked me into it on the spot when she found out I'm a journalist. The job entails taking notes at quarterly meetings, typing up minutes, and sending out a quarterly newsletter. Well worth it to have a say-so in the behind-the-scenes decisions.

At some committees, I'm told, there are more people who come, so it's a good idea to "pad" your vote by bringing a few friends and family members from the district to vote for you.

I urge all of you to do this the next time there's an opening on your local Assembly district Democratic committee!

8. I'm in La Mesa, California--a San Diego suburb.

Assembly District 77 includes most of East County.
In addition to attending the District 77 committee meetings, I can also attend the San Diego Democratic County Central Committee meetings.

What part of California are you in?

21. I'm in Southern California--
more specifically Torrance or what is called around here the South Bay, I'm near Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach--the Beach cities.

It's nice to know there are sane, good people in/near San Diego. Another board I used to frequent had this insane Republican woman. She lived in or near San Diego and was always going on about how vicious the Dems in her area were, because people kept stealing her precious GW lawn sign (oh cry me a river). A few women tried to tell her maybe the area had more Dems than she was aware of and maybe she should leave it down. She was stubborn as a mule (and dumb as one I might add).

What's worse she's a transplant from somewhere else. I hate hearing about Repubs that come to California from other places only to get here and complain about 'all the liberals.' Why move here?

Sorry to go off on a tangent--lol

Congrats again!

9. Congrats, I ran for vice chair of mine
did not make it... but the chair and vice chair already warned me not to even try to disapear. Oh and they are our kind of people, PROGRESSIVES

I would have run for E Delegate but alas... funds are still tight.

Oh and methinks a take over of Local boards are now fully underway.

;-)

12. You'd have been great, Nadin. But stick around...
They may need more alternates. You can always volunteer to work at the convention, if you want to see what's going on.

11. Congrats to all & me too!
I was elected as a delegate for the 37th today! Our district includes major parts of Ventura County, a smaller portion of North Los Angeles county and a teeny tiny part of Kern County. In all, over 83,000 Dems registered in the 37th. We have our work cut out for us, but we're all energized and ready to get going!

Definitely, let's have a CA Dem DU Meetup at the Convention in April!

I'm not a DFA/Deaniac person, but I'm sure there will be some there who will want to arrange a meetup...best wishes!

See you in April!

22. I'm stepping up for the head count too!!!
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 04:44 AM by LosAngelesDemocrat
58th AD representing!!! I got elected too! Just waiting for the delegates to be submitted to Sacramento before it's official. But I'm happy to say that I got all my friends with me elected too!!! I'm a delegate with 2 council members - one a former mayor and activists throughout the district as well as people that are going to be running this Nov. in local elections. I had Representatives/elected officials of 4 different cities in the AD congratulate me and they came out to vote for me. I should be the one thanking them. Now the good work begins. Education, health care, youth outreach, pro-jobs/pro-economy, environment, smart economic revitalization; it's time to carry the liberal banner and wear it proudly! So you all coming to my Hometown of LA for the convention. Host delegates, we need to do something for everyone!
