Californians--what newspapers do you read AND trust... |
|
if any?
Personally, the LA Times seems hit or miss to me. I could be wrong about them.
I've become quite fond of the LA Weekly. Any paper that creates a survival guide for the next four years, and has been critical of Gov. Full of Himself is alright with me.
What about everyone else? What are the decent papers in your communities/cities?
Looking forward to your responses!
Bliss:)

1. CityBeat and Zengers are best in San Diego. Reader is bland, U-T is GOP. |

3. Not a CA paper, but the Christian Science Monitor |
|
is one of the last, truly objective newspapers around.

17. Yes, my college Journalism teacher told us that too |
|
and we'd use it as a base to do our stories.

10. I know, the Daily Breeze frequently gets on my nerves-- |
|
as does the Beach Reporter. But I hold the Daily Breeze to higher standards than the Beach Reporter. Like you, I sometimes read it for local issues.
You can find LA Weekly at some newstands, in it's own newspaper stand. I usually pick it up at the Torrance Library. Every branch of the library usually has it on a front table--it's a freebie!

7. It may be more productive to pay attention to each writer |
|
Instead of providing a blank check to a particular paper, it may be more important and effective to profile the journalist writing the articles. Then after getting to know the writer from his articles, contacting him/her directly to develop a relationship repeating the same thing with other writers in their office. Then determining the office politics. Figuring who the freelancers are that jump from paper to paper. Then it's not a matter of trusting them to write a article that articulates what you believe, but trusting them to be consistent with what kind of person you know them to be. Then you'll realize that there is more said with what is not printed than with what is printed. It'll also surprise you how opinionated many of them are - though usually it's to bait you into giving more information.

12. The East County Californian just got better, because... |
|
I'm writing for it! The new editor and publisher are liberals. My first piece is a front-page story on Social Security.
Wooo hooo!

Except that I don't live in Sac. The SF Chron is A JOKE and a complete sellout. Mark Sandalow, reporter from their Washington bureau is the worst low-level Bush cheerleader slime there is. And this is supposedly a "liberal" paper. Sorry to say, I get most of my news online from various national and worldwide sources these days.
