Poll: Schwarzenegger Losing Appeal Among Dems, Independents
Poll: Schwarzenegger Losing Appeal Among Dems, Independents
Overall Support For Governor Remains High Among Voters

POSTED: 8:42 am PST January 27, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Overall support for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger remains high among voters, but he is losing his appeal among Democrats and independents, according to a poll released Thursday.

The survey from the Public Policy Institute found 60 percent of Californians favor the way the Republican governor is doing his job, but 49 percent of Democrats disapprove.

Six in 10 independent voters still give Schwarzenegger high marks - the same as last year - but the number of independents who disapprove of him has almost doubled, from 18 percent last year to 32 percent this year.

The numbers may come as sobering news to the governor who has proposed a reform package he wants to bring before voters in a special election this year - ideas that would require broad support across party lines to be successful.
