TAMPA - The attorney general has named Tampa one of 15 cities to receive federal help in reducing crime.

Thursday, local authorities announced the goal of the initiative, called VCIT. The Violent Crime Impact Team will work closely with the U.S. attorney's office and the state attorney's office to arrest the most violent offenders in Tampa.

"Through VCIT we are going to equip Tampa Police Department with advanced tools, training, and information, helping them to work smarter," ATF special agent John Ryan stated.

Attorney General John Ashcroft believes the teams will make cities safer.

Tampa was chosen because of its relatively high homicide and violent crime rates.
