Castor supports travel sanctions on Cuban-American families
http://www.sptimes.com/2004/07/18/Tampabay/Tampa_protest_shows_d.shtml
Across town, Democratic senatorial hopeful Betty Castor opened her Ybor City campaign headquarters Saturday by speaking out against the new travel restrictions.

She outlined her own Cuba policy, which calls for once-a-year island visits by family members and the freedom to send unlimited money to Cuban relatives.

A rose is a rose.....

Travel restrictions are travel restrictions.

1. Once a year is a lot better than is in place now...
and unlimited spending.

2. I just don't understand Bush's policy. The Cuban-Americans
who support Republicans are the older ones who fled before and just after Castro took over. They are the wealthier ones who may not have any family there anymore. They were the supporters of Battista-a dictator of the worst kind. They should not be making policy for others--Cubans or Americans. Pandering for votes is nothing new on either side, but Bush has it down to an art. If the people who are in Cuba now have no money, no method to strive for better than what they have, they will never be able to change their government. However, Castro can't live forever, but until then I feel it best to help the people. Just my 2 cents.

3. The Dem policy is only slightly less egregious

The long term travel sanctions on Cuban-Americans and Americans is an abridgement of our constitutional rights.

Tell me what other group is singled out and discriminated against like this?

Why are any travel restriction acceptable? Its an abridgment of our rights, and the singling out of Cuban immigrants and their families is unconscionable!

For any politician to support such unconstitutional and unfair "rules" is disgusting.

But, sadly, Kerry does just that.

Kerry's stated policy on Cuba:
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/8848574.htm
  • Under a Kerry administration Cuba will remain under US sanctions
  • Under a Kerry administration we will still be travel banned unless our travel is deemed politically worthy by US gov jackboot

    4. I didn't know that about Kerry. I am sorry to hear it. I was under
the impression he had more "values" than Bush. I remember the days of Castro fighting Battista. I traveled to Cuba with my mother in 1943 and loved the countryside. I knew nothing of politics then.

    5. It is sad.

I've been to Cuba many times (legally). It is still beautiful, and the Cuban people are as friendly as humans get.

That's why millions of people from the world over go to Cuba every year - except Americans, because we are not free enough to do so.

    6. Beautiful picture!
Yes, 90 miles from the U.S. and we can't go. You can get more with honey than vinegar and we are really pouring on the vinegar. But I feel for the Cubans--the ones still there.
