26. Polling 101
Unanimity can hardly be assumed based on an Internet poll, let alone one lacking secrecy.

14. I did not vote for Obama.
I voted for Hynes.

Wanna know why?

I live in rural northern Illinois. Obama ignored us. There were events held by his supporters in Rockford and in the Quad Cities. He did not show up to either one. I resented that he did not get outside of Chicago. At least Hynes knows where my county is, and attends some of our Democratic Party events.

Yeah, our population is smaller here, but the number of rural progressives is growing. I have seen this with my own eyes, in the twenty-five years I have lived here.

I like Obama, too. I like what he stands for. However, this is not a slam-dunk. Someone better tell him and his campaign that Illinois is a big state. We need to see him and hear from him, too. I would hate to lose this thing to Ryan!

19. Obama's campaign guy got nailed on that last weekend.
I was at an organizational meeting last weekend with Obama's downstate guy and he got told repeatedly that Obama has GOT to get out in the rest of the state for the General. What YOU just said is EXACTLY what was said last weekend in Vermilion County and in Champaign County.

The strategy they had for the Primary was focus on Chicago and the collar counties--plus a few more "metro" areas. They won with it--but they realize that the General election is a whole different ballgame.

I think you'll be seeing Obama come thru your area more often, based on what was said last weekend.

Laura

FWIW, murielm99, Hynes WON most of the rest of the state in that primary--and there was a reason for that. Hynes WORKED the rest of the state. You are dead on when you talk about getting outside the cities!

22. Obama will work the rest of the state
Look at the numbers state wide. Obama needed to work Chicago in the primary. Now that he's the Dem nominee, he will make the rounds statewide.

Downstate DUers, take the time to learn about Barack Obama. I think you guys will like him.

33. Folks, please...
Hynes worked the state because that's where he could win.

Obama was never going to beat Hynes downstate -- just as Blagojevich was never going to beat the tandem of Burris and Vallas in the Chicago Metro area.

You cast your net where the fish are.

Please please please don't take primary absences by Obama as a slight.

Of COURSE both candidates will actively work downstate -- but if Obama had devoted half the time downstate that Hynes did, he might not be the nominee now.

Someone said here that Hynes won in the most places. But Illinois does not work on an electoral college system. Popular vote wins.

It is simply an unfortunate reality that you have to play the game by the rules or you risk going down in flames. Look at Obama's record -- much of his legislation has been as helpful to small-town and rural IL as it has on the South Side of Chicago.

Come November, Downstaters will know well that Blagojevich is no longer the funniest name in IL politics.

34. Yep, you are dead on.
Obama did what he had to in that primary.

In one of our other threads here, I was talking about the fact that Obama ran a VERY smart campaign to get to this point, and fully recognizes that the battle is just at midpoint.

My comments about his lack of time in downstate were mostly to let everybody know that his campaign IS aware of the perception out there, and they are planning to be everywhere they can in the General. (Frankly, I wish they could clone him--we need a bunch more LIKE him!)

Pax to you, and I am sorry if I left the impression that I am less than thrilled with anything Obama has done to date--nothing could be further from the truth!

Spouse and I, both kids and their spouses. I supported Hynes until I heard Obama speak. Particularly Obama's stand on the Iraq War compared to Hynes. I was afraid Obama couldn't carry down state but he carried my county.

29. Gotta love her
I was able to meet her right before the election at the kerry rally downtown Chicago. She's great but back to Polling 101, no chance. I was pissed though to hear Andy Shaw say she wasn't viable because she had no prior experience, like being a rich white man? How could he turn around and talk seriously about Hull, ryan, Oberweiss or others? Typical crap media, and he's considered to be some kind of expert.

30. me Obama my wife Dan Hines
She thought Dan more electable. After seeing how a friend got walloped in a House race against a pure moron because of his race, she is concerned that too many whites would vote on race alone. The truth is we had a embarrassment of riches in the primary, and got a great progressive candidate in Obama.

31. Sounds familiar! Hubby was a Hynes person.
Like you--ours was a mixed household. Hubby did a fair amount of work for Hynes in the primary--to the extent of working for him here in Champaign County on election day. It got kinda strange when I was passing out stuff for Obama and he was working precincts for Hynes.

Funny thing was--neither of us DISLIKED the other candidate. We both felt they were wonderful candidates that would be assets to the Illinois ticket in the General. This just happened to be the year for Obama, I think.

I proudly worked and voted for him, because I really think he would've been a breath of fresh air. Although, I saw Obama speak at a candidate forum in Rockford, and I was very impressed. I think he'll do us very well in the US Senate! :)
