Great news...finally! The Daily Herald was a surprise with their endorsement of Kerry, but this just makes that sweeter...

Bean and Kirk for House Dists. 8 and 10
Daily Herald Reports
Posted 10/26/2004
Philip M. Crane has been a member of Congress for more than three decades, elected first in 1969. In that time, he has built a reputation as one of the most conservative members of the U.S. House.

At the risk that Rep. Crane's campaign will quote this editorial out of context as it has in past elections, we admit a certain admiration for Crane's devotion to his philosophy, even though we see that philosophy as too extreme. Crane is uncompromising in his beliefs and clings to them no matter the political, legislative or logical cost.

Unfortunately, Crane has built another solid reputation in Congress that clearly is not admirable: That of a show horse, not a workhorse. After 35 years in office, he has accomplished little of significance.

Consider some of his Republican congressional colleagues from Chicago's suburbs who became national figures. In less time in office, Dennis Hastert became Speaker of the House. Henry Hyde rose to chair the House Judiciary Committee that conducted the impeachment hearings of President Clinton.

Crane? His national claim to fame came in being unceremoniously rejected by his own party for the chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee. Crane's tenure should have secured that powerful position, but his track record of nonperformance lost it.

It is a time for a change in the 8th District , which takes in most of Lake and McHenry counties and a portion of northwest Cook County.

That change is Melissa L. Bean. She is an unconventional Democrat in some respects, a serious-minded pro-business moderate from Barrington who is making her second run at Crane's seat.

By all accounts, it is a close race, and we enthusiastically endorse Bean as the candidate who will work hardest on behalf of the district and the candidate who best reflects the views of its residents.

If you have friends, relatives, business contacts...anyone in the 8th district that can vote, we need their help. There's a lot of Repubnican money flooding the area and these endorsements need to get out to as many as possible.

Things are starting to feel better, but not good yet.

Cheers!
