Since I just moved up here, I figured I would see who all lives here.
I'm up in Zion, which is basically Wisconsin, but technically Illinois.

there are a LOT of us. You should come to our next Chicago-area get-together. If you think coming from Zion is a long drive, eyesroll, whoisalhedges and dolo amber often come down from Milwaukee, and Prolesunited and Blue_Jay from northwest Indiana.
Nothing is planned at present, but there is certain to be a gathering over the winter.

When I moved to Chicago 10 years ago, I moved in Lakeview. I'm gay, and Lakeview (or Boystown) was the place I wanted to live. But I just couldn't afford to live there after a few years...a decent one bedroom is probably $1000 now. I then moved to Uptown and was priced out of that. Now, Edgewater (which is a pretty decent area and affordable)

17. Wellllll...not sure if you're being facetious here, my friend, but |
|
my first answer would be "no"...Actually, I like Chicago..especially the Lakeview area, but I got "spoiled" many years ago by living in the SF Bay of California, and since then, nothing really compares...(nothing now compares to their outrageously high cost of living, either but that's another story).

Yeah, most of Lakeview is absurd, but I found a nice apartment with two friends and I'm paying under $500 a month. Still a little high, but when you compare it to the $500,000 condos next door...

it may be more moderate or at least offer more of a "range"...For instance, you can completely forget living in San Fran. in even the smallest, bare-bones studio if you're not ready to pay at least $800 month.

I can spit into the Naperville school district (White Eagle) though we're a bit oddball where I am. Far south-east Aurora, Will County, Oswego school district. Just relieved we're not in Naperville School District as I hear their taxes are through the bloomin' roof! I can see Plainfield from where we live (if I climb on the top of my house :P ).
I like Aurora, and I know it's odd, but I think it's the coolest thing ever to have the city offices on an island in the middle of the Fox River! I also like being close to Pubbie HQ (ha ha) in Naperville, as they have some great family-oriented stuff in Summer, to take the wee one to. :)

I did however buy and give away 100 JK signs to people in Peoria county, and found in doing so that there were a few more casual dems hiding in their houses around here. Maybe some of them will find DU someday...

Go into battle, take a beating, come back to DU and we'll help give you energy. That's how I use DU. Get pumped up by other Democrats thinking the same thing I am and making me feel stronger about the fight knowing I'm not alone.
Perhaps you could point those casual DUers here by putting up posters for DU in coffee shops, grocery stores, etc.?

I have a low post count but have lurked here for 4-5 years just b/c there was no one locally to converse with...
"I am Can o Beans, and I am reporting for duty."
And if you can tell me where to get some DU gear to post around, I will start the recruitment drive yesterday.

IL, about 1.5 miles from the end of a runway at Quad-City International ('cuz they have one weekly flight to Mexico:silly:) Airport.
Suggestion for a meet-up: imVho, a central location venue would lure more of we middle/down-staters.

But since we are just a far-North suburb of Chicago, I'll join in.
Born in Chicago, lived at Belmont & Cicero until 1965.
Grew up in Niles and lived there and in Glenview (hung out some in Evanston) until 1986 when I moved here.
Came back to Chicago, lived at Montrose & Western.
Came back here to Milwaukee.
Came back to Chicago and lived at Halsted & Roscoe.
Came back to Milwaukee in 1991 and stayed.

Yeah, I haven't posted much since mid-November. Our offices got consolidated and the "Company Internet Police" have DU categorized as "chat" and won't let me past the front page. Not a political blockage, just compliance and productivity ban. So that leaves weekends and nights, the same times I have many things to do.
I'm here in spirit though, even if not physically.

It's amazing the way things change though. I grew up from 8th grade on there, and when I first moved to Beardstown it was a completely redneck white's-only town. Now there's a huge hispanic population living there, the school is bilingual, and the culture has really taken off. There are still plenty of the redneck gun-totin' types, but they all seem to get along pretty well these days.
