My family lives a block away from the "Iraqi Election" center in Skokie |
|
I posted this in General Discussion, but thought it would be appropriate to repost here...
There are 5 centers across the US, one of them being in Skokie, IL. The center is in the newly formed Assyrian Culture Center, which ironically bought the facility from a failing Jewish synagogue of 30 years.
One of the clauses in the purchase of the building (by the Assyrian Culture Center), was that a small section was going to continue to house a small Jewish prayer group that meets every Saturday. My parents are members of that prayer group.
I am a little concerned about the upcoming weekends, as we will be in the building/area, while registration and voting occurs. My concerns are primarily for the safety of all. With such horrific reports of what's happening Iraq, to deter the elections, I wonder if it could cross over and happen here?
I know there will be alot of security and precautions, but I am still some what worried.
Should I be? What do you think?

all i can say is that i am constantly amused by the behavior of ex-pats. while india and pakistan are enemies in the real world, on devon ave., there are indo-pak this and that everywhere. maybe this is the self selection of people who leave their countries behind. but i always found it amazing and amusing. not that my experience is that wide, but i think most of the ex-pats from that part of the world are eager to leave the bloodshed over there.

And what I hope will be the case. I am pretty certain, but who really knows?

if you are worried why not take a 15 minute drive to a nearby Jewish synagogue - say in Waukegan?
I've been gone from the area for 40 years - but the Porret Brothers (Leo) mentioned some building program way back then - is the Skokie former synagogue the product of that fund raising? Just curious.

Thanks for the post. I think it might make sense for my parents to miss the next few weeks...
