Peoria Journal-Star: Gay Road goes away
http://www.pjstar.com/stories/012505/TRI_B5D5VK4L.003.shtml

"MARQUETTE HEIGHTS - Several Marquette Heights residents no longer have to worry about being harassed or laughed at when they tell people they live on Gay Road.
By a 4-1 vote Monday night, City Council members agreed to change the name to Hennepin Road.

The issue came to council after Blair Williams, who lives on the street, sent a petition to his neighbors. Of the 10 households on the road, eight signed the petition, said Darlene Elmore, a Gay Road resident.

Elmore, who's lived on Gay Road for 13 years, said she wanted the name changed because of the taunting she and her children have endured."

How sad that our society can not handle a road named Gay. How sad that the Peoria Journal Star has nothing better to report.

1. It is sad that our society can't handle a street name
But 8 out of 10 households on the road wanted the name change. So I would have to say the city council acted corectly.

A couple of years ago, there was a petition here to rename a street Martin Luther King Drive. Many residents on the street supported the name change, but a couple of big business' on the same street railed against it. Needless to say, the street was not renamed. The "compromise" was to rename a bridge after Dr. King.

2. In Knoxville TN
The central road downtown is Gay St and it has a large Gay St bridge. I guess you just have to deal with it when the main business district is centered around Gay street. That's what they should do in this town.

3. Now I guess I shall have to go
dancing at Hennepin bars and refrain from Hennepin-bashing. Luckily, I have Hennpin-dar so I can tell when they are around.

4. Perhaps we should suggest a new name ...
I think "Bigot Road" might be appropriate. Maybe "Narrow-Minded Lane" ... or "Reich Road."

5. Santorum Rd.
Or take it another direction. Let's give them a street name that will REALLY make the uncomfortable. Queer Street. Anal Avenue. Everyone On My Block is Gay Road. Bawlsuck Boulevard. Liberache St. Yellow Brick Road.
:)

6. Oh Radical Activist
You rock my world. They REALLY should have renamed it Santorum. We could have got a good laugh out of it and the residents probably would have been clueless.
