1. She's running against Phil Crane, not Hateful Hyde.
Great candidate, though. A coworker who lives in Lake County says if she changed her party affiliation to Republican she'd beat Crane in the primary -- because the district is so heavily repuke. Obviously, she is a woman of integrity.

4. I remember Rumsferatu in that district.
Back in 1970 when I was a 21-year-old journalism student at NU, I had to cover Crane's victory party on election night. His campaign manager and close aide propositioned me. I think the turd was old enough to be my father!

You can guess how I responded.

5. Hello Stevie & Other 8th District Dems...Are You Really There???
Here's wishing Melissa the best in knocking out this no-clout, arrogant alchie, who should have been sent packing ages ago.

I had this loser as a Congressman (and worked against him in my first Congressional campaign for Edward Warman in 1970) when I lived in Lincolnwood, and still do today. Sheesh. But then, my previous Congressman was Donald Von Rumsfeldt (who I met on an 8th grade field trip in 1969...I have yet to admit this to my wife).

Here's hoping Melissa can get the word out...it's a large district and not an easy one to get media access. We're wedged between Hyde to the South & Hastart the Bastard to the West...but Melissa did well in 2002 and things are are lot different now.

We've already made one contribution with another one ready to go. We're also looking into volunteering where we can help.

Cheers to all

7. I Was 25 Years Ago...
My parents lived there until 2002. I still have lots of friends and family in the area...Jan S. district.

I'm out near Woodfield...about 30 miles west and deep in the wilds of Repugnican Cook County.

10. It's Not As Bad As It Was...
On primary day there were two Democrat booths next to the two Republican ones at my polling place...a far cry when I'd walk in during the 80's and there was NO Democrat booth...they had to make one for me. I wasn't too popular. LOL.

Then I remember my grandmother's stories of being a precinct captain in Chicago during the 40's and 50's...and having to draw straws as to who would be the Republican for a day to make sure the polling was "legal" (in a Chicago sense).

I know your area well...Rogers Park...Loyola and home of the TJOs.

Cheers

9. I am in Lake Zurich
But I grew up in Mt. Prospect, pretty much an 6th district lifer, at least sine I was 3. I have been considering doing some volunteer work for Missy. it may be the best use of my energy since I think Kerry has the state wrapped up and I feel good about Obama as well. She has an office right on Rand Road, I understand. I'll have to stop by.

12. If any of Bean's people lurk here, please read this:
I've heard from several people that Melissa had "snubbed" them at events. Most notably, at Unity Breakfast after the primary, she was too focused on talking to the people she needed to talk to, that she walked past outstretched hands and ignored several introductions. These were attendees at the Unity Breakfast, so obviously they were big democrats in the state party. They may not be well known in her district, but their word gets around.

On a recent visit to Chicago, I drove out to Lake Zurich and stopped in her campaign office, and although she was in the front area, she failed to acknowledge my presence, also. There were no staffers up front at the time, and one had to come up front to greet me. I don't know if she was busy or in the middle of something, but if she had time to see me and make eye contact, she had time to say "Hello, I'm Melissa Bean."

She is a good person, but she is also the state's best chance for a democratic pick-up, outside of Obama who I won't count because the seat is open. Roll Call, CQ, and the New York Times have all said she is the strongest challenger ever to Phil Crane.

But this is campaign politics, and you have to shake every hand. Good democrats will always be there in the voting booth for her, snubbed or not. But as far as opening the checkbook or putting in a few Saturdays of yard-sign posting, they'll look to another race.

13. Sorry, stop in again
I volunteer in Melissa Bean's office almost daily. Sorry I wasn't there when you were. It is rare that a visitor to that office does NOT get "Hi, thanks for stopping in..." as their first greeting from the Campaign Manager for sure and often from Melissa herself as well.

I have worked on four congressional campaigns and this office is the friendliest and most outgoing of the bunch. The friendly, outgoing attitude rubs off on all of us volunteers so that we have learned to greet others in the same way when staff is busy. But then again, everybody does have an off day. Do stop in again and ask for Brett.

Yes, Melissa Bean IS the best chance for a Democratic pick-up in the House. Melissa's win will also eliminate Crane, the longest-serving and least effective R in Congress.

Check out Melissa Bean at http://www.melissabean.com and donate to help her retire Crane.

14. Brett's cool as shit.
And Melissa is a great candidate, but she can't ever forget she is a candidate. I think at the Breakfast she was more concerned with shaking hands with the deep pockets, which is the unavoidable downsides in a challenger's campaign, and it is understandable.

I just pass along this message because one of the people is big with IDW, and she wants to see Bean in office. It wasn't that I was offended, or any of my political contacts were personally offended. Campaigning is tough, and we understand that. I also want to see Bean win, I've been watching her race for a while. I just wanted to offer a little tip.

It takes a lot of conviction for a first time candidate to lick their wounds and get right back in the fray, and she did. You gotta love that.

15. Well said
Yes, Melissa Bean is a great candidate and has gone right back at it with renewed energy. And it shows. Everyone in DC suddenly seems to be noticing. Sadly, it looks to me like the only way a candidate does get noticed anymore is when the big money from the deep pockets starts coming in.

I'm just sorry you had a bad experience in the campaign office and hope you stop back in. I miss days like today when I can't be volunteering there because it is a fun exciting place to be. Yes to your Brett subject line as well. He runs a fantastic operation. And your first message did get delivered.

This will be the race to watch in Illinois.

17. Glad To See The Bean Campaign Checking In...
Is there an area office in the Schaumburg/Hanover area? We'd like to help as well, the checkbook already has been working, but we'd like to do more where we can. An address or phone number would be great, thanks!

Also it'd be good so others in Illinois and around the country can get involved as well. I like Melissa and she's the best chance I've seen in my 20+ years in this District to get rid of Crane.

Cheers

18. Melissa Bean's Office
Edited on Sat Apr-24-04 08:41 AM by Eman
I'm not really the campaign. Just another volunteer who checks this site and passes on messages (BTW something you can do from home for other blog and chat sites).

Right now Melissa Bean only has the one office. I doubt she can afford to staff more - one is hard enough, even with begged and borrowed equipment. You may already know the district runs from Hanover north to Wisconsin and from the lakeshore west across Lake County and through most of McHenry County. Lake Zurich is actually pretty central to the district, believe it or not, and easy to get to from Hwy 53.

Melissa Bean for Congress
979 S. Rand Road
Lake Zurich, IL 60047
847.304.0056

Detailed driving directions are on the Melissa Bean website at www.melissabean.com on the Contact Us page.

There are many ways you can help the campaign from your home. There may already be someone assigned to work your precinct, or you may want that job. Call Brett at 847.304.0056 and tell him what you would like to do. He will get materials to you if you can't get to Lake Zurich.

I have lived here all my life (in and out of the multi-redistricted 8th) and agree Melissa Bean is the one person who can finally retire the Crane. Thanks for your support!

19. Melissa Bean vs. Phil Crane
Melissa Bean is running against Crane, not Hyde. Crane is the oldest republican in congress who hasn't done anything since before I was born. You can find out about Mrs. Bean and Crane at http://www.melissabean.com

Mrs. Bean can win this one. People are fedup with Crane. Look at the EDDI (democrats and independents) website to see how CRane is lying to seniors. http://www.il-democrats.org/8thdistrict/index.html

In the middle of a campaign he gets to send out mailings like that to grandparents for free. That is sick.

23. Does Bean really have a chance?
I live in Schaumburg, and this would be pretty exciting.

For the first time in my life I was actually polled about a week or so ago, and they asked the Bush v Kerry question, but the brunt of the interview was Crane v Bean.

The fact that they're polling for a congressional race made me think that it could actually be tight, and nothing would please me more than to send that jerkoff and * packing in November.

24. She sure does!
Congressional Quarterly
New York Times
Crain's Chicago Business

all of them saying this race is winable, and that the Illinois 8th is no longer a republican safe district. Melissa Bean has a great organization started and has raised more money so far than in the entire campaign of 2002.

Melissa Bean received 43% of the vote in 2002 - more than any challenger ever against Crane in 33 years. And that was with almost no financial backing and very little help. People like you are the key.

Check out what the volunteers are doing on Melissa's website. Come join the rest of us volunteers. Get involved. Call 847.304.0056 and ask Brett what you can do to help or volunteer online at www.melissabean.com We do have a lot of fun and we need people in every neighborhood to start spreading the word now.

And yes, this IS the year to retire Crane.
