OLSON ANNOUNCES BID FOR STATEHOUSE

June 21, 2005 (Cedar Rapids, IA) – Tyler Olson, attorney at Bradley &
Riley
PC, has announced his candidacy for the Iowa State House from District
38.
Olson, a Democrat, is a Cedar Rapids native and graduated from
Washington
High School in 1994. He earned his law degree at the University of
Iowa
College of Law.

Olson pledges to bring innovative leadership, fresh ideas, and creative
solutions
to the issues facing Iowa.

"Iowa is a great place to live," says Olson, "and the future of our
state
depends on both our ability to attract people—and our willingness to
build
on the opportunities available to those already living here."

Olson, who lived in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. before returning
to
Cedar Rapids, knows firsthand that Iowa can be appealing to young
people.
"I enjoyed my experiences on the east and west coasts, but Iowa was the
place
I wanted to live and work. I know that we can capitalize on the sense
of
community and abundance of opportunity that pulled me back to Iowa, and
draw
others, as well."

Olson's campaign will focus on advancing Iowa's strong education
system.
"The task of educating our citizens will not be complete until all
members
of the community have the opportunity to pursue a great education — one
that
allows them to compete in the job market," says Olson. He will also
emphasize
fiscally responsible government and access to quality and affordable
healthcare
for all Iowans, especially our children and seniors.

Olson says these issues are also key components to Iowa's economic
development
strategy. "Business development is about creating an environment and a
quality
of life that attracts employees and employers to keep our great state
moving
forward," says Olson.

"I am looking forward to knocking on every door in the district to hear
about
issues important to the community," says Olson.

Olson is a member of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Rotary and chairs the
Downtown
District Creative Counsel's Housing Team. He is a member of the board
of
directors of the Neighborhood Revitalization Service and the New
Bohemia
Arts & Culture District. He is also a member of the board of directors
of
Access Iowa, where he chairs the Civic Committee and served on the 15
in
5 Community Planning Committee's Downtown & Riverfront Subcommittee.
Olson
is a founding member of the board of directors of Corridor Free
Wireless,
Inc., a not-for-profit entity organized to bring free wireless internet
access
to downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Coralville.

Olson serves as a volunteer boys swimming coach at Washington High
School,
where he was a member of the 1992 state championship team and the
captain
of the 1994 state championship team.

Olson will file papers forming the Committee to Elect Tyler Olson.
Gary Streit is the chairman and Dana Ehrhart is the treasurer of the
committee.

3. Confirmed, Rob Hogg
Here is some info I have on Mr Hogg..he is running for State Senate this year...

----------

Hogg Announces Run For State Senate
Dear Friends:

Today, I am announcing my candidacy in 2006 for the Iowa Senate from Senate District 19. After two terms in the Iowa House, I am running for the Senate where I can better promote a positive agenda for Iowa's future.

With your help, we have already made Iowa better in my first three years in the House. Some of our accomplishments include:

Providing 4% allowable growth for our schools (2004 and 2005).
Expanding early childhood educational opportunities (2005).
Restoring funding for Iowa's community colleges (2005).
Providing investment tax credits for smaller businesses (2003 & 2005).
Updating Iowa's motor vehicle child safety law (2004).
Funding and strengthening Iowa's sex offender laws (2005).
Fighting for fiscal responsibility to ensure needed funds for public safety, education, and health care (2003).
Providing production incentives for renewable energy (2005).
Creating a targeted clean water grant program (2005).
Passing a ten-year, pay-as-you-go Iowa Values Fund to provide consistent economic development for good jobs that pay living wages and provide health benefits (2005).
This is a significant list of accomplishments. But we need to continue the momentum to improve our schools, help our environment, and strengthen our economy. And more needs to be done. In addition to "follow through" on the issues listed above, we need to:

Meet our obligations for public health and improve prevention programs - to make our children, seniors, families, and communities safer and healthier.
Reform state government so we can do more with the resources we have and reduce the regulatory burden on Iowans without hurting health, safety, or the environment.
Promote energy efficiency to improve our economy and sustain our environment.
Restore fiscal responsibility to protect and repay the Senior Living Trust Fund and other funds that have been raided over the last five years.
In sum, we need fiscally responsible government that consistently meets its obligations for public safety, children, seniors, the environment, and health care, and invests wisely in education and the economy for Iowa's future.

My service in the Iowa Senate can help us achieve these goals. The seat for which I am running is currently held by Chuck Larson (R-Cedar Rapids). At this point, it is unclear whether he will seek re-election. Either way, I am running because I believe I can do a better job in the Iowa Senate for the citizens of Senate District 19 and the State of Iowa as a whole. With your help, we can win this race and advance a positive agenda in the Iowa Senate to make Iowa even better.

Freedom Festival Parade, June 25. On Saturday, June 25, at 9:00 a.m., I will be pulling one of my daughters in our little red wagon in the Freedom Festival parade in downtown Cedar Rapids. After the Freedom Festival parade, please remember the Juneteenth Celebration at the African-American Museum and Cultural Center, 55 12th Ave SE, in Cedar Rapids, starting with a march to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr., across the 12th Avenue Bridge at 10:45 a.m. . . . On July 8-10, the local Sierra Club is camping at Wildwood on the Maquoketa River. For more information, call Mike Wyrick at 362-6662. . . . The Indian Creek Nature Center is launching "Kayak the Cedar" on June 24, July 15, July 29, and August 19. Call 362-0664 to register or for more information. . . . I hope yo are able to participate in one or more of these events.

6. Is Larson the guy heading up Nussle's team?
Dems have been trying to get rid of Larson for a while. Would be nice to see him defeated. Looks like you're going to be busy the next 1 1/2 years!

9. Yep!
That is the same Chuck Larson. I am hoping that means he will forget about his state senate seat and jump aboard Nussle's sinkin ship!

7. Hogg v. Larson
Rob Hogg is pretty careful. He must sense that Larson wants to move on. There were all kinds of stories about Larson after he returned from Iraq about how shallow/petty he thought the debate was at the Iowa Legislature. Larson and his wife are expecting their first kid in the next couple weeks. Even if Larson runs again to appease the old Repubs, he probably will not be as relentless as he was pre-Iraq. Hogg still has the "fire in the belly."

Anybody else looking at Hogg's old seat?

8. Unsure
Not that I am aware of, but then I haven't really been that in tune as of late in regards to the state house/senate elections. I have been pretty busy with local things.

I have known of Tyler Olson for quite a while now due to his involvement with the Linn County Dems Finance Committee and the Fifteen in 5 Sub-Committee, he is a very articulate and intelligent young guy. I think he stands a pretty good shot and would like to see him move on from the state house to something bigger eventually.

If I hear of any more potential candidates I will be sure to pass the info along!
