Senate confirms Dorr's Ag nomination, ending four-year battle

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ending a four-year battle, the Senate on Thursday confirmed Thomas Dorr to head the Agriculture Department's rural affairs office after he apologized for making racially insensitive remarks and evading limits on farm payments.

The Senate voted 62-38 to approve the nomination. Dorr sent a letter of apology Thursday to the Senate Agriculture Committee chairman.

"The comment was not intended to be hurtful, I now realize that to many people, it has been, and for this I apologize," Dorr wrote to Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.
-----
According to the article, he probably owes the government about $70,000 but HE STILL HAS THE NERVE TO LECTURE OTHER PEOPLE:

"Regarding farm program payment issues, what I did was wrong. I regret that I did it. If I had to do it over, I would not have filed my farming operations as I did with the Farm Service Agency. I hope that other farmers learn from what I did," wrote Dorr, a former Iowa farmer and businessman.

2. You know what this means?
It means that anybody Bush nominates, ANYBODY, gets the job eventually. Watch for John Bolton to be a recess appointment in August and John Roberts to be confirmed in September. So much for integrity, so much balance. Is is Jan 2009 yet?

3. Isn't his brother quite a piece of work also?
Some kind of tax nut who goes around and stops school bond issues? Seem to remember reading something about him in the Register a few years back.

4. We are in the midst of a drought
and corn, as well as other crops are being ruined because of it. If this joker won't pay farmers their much needed federal crop insurance, you can bet that there will be some serious hell raising. So, if they (the farmers) file like he did, they get busted, right? But if they file honestly, they'll probably get screwed. The bottom line will be even higher food prices for us consumers, and the corporate farms will not suffer, while the family farms will.
