Just came from a local vigil for Ms. Sheehan
There is a local Quad-City lady who was in Camp Casey for a week. Why? Two reasons. She has a son in the USMC and she believes very strongly in what Cindy Sheehan is doing down there in Crawford. Her name is Caryn Unsicker. She drove 17 hrs. in an older beat up truck all by herself with very little money. She told about being there and how wonderful the people were to her at Crawford Peace House and the encampment. She also told a tale of an older retired couple who were just traveling around the USA, as retirees often do. They were listening to AAR all the way and the lady turned to her husband and said, "Turn the car around. We're going to Crawford." And so they did.
A few peace songs were sung (poorly by me) and then the reverend at this progressive church where this was being held said a few words. Then the candle lighting began and people were singing a song to the tune of "Down by the Riverside", except the words were slightly changed to "Gonna lay down my sword and shield down by the riverside". We all formed a circle in the general area where the vigil was being held and sang and held up our candles. The attendance wasn't too bad, about 100-120 people. The parking lot was full and cars were parked on the grass. All in all, a successful peace vigil. It was neat to hear Mrs. Unsicker tell her tales of being there, especially since she was visibly moved by all the love and goodwill that she was accorded down there and here too. There were at least two local media outlets there as well, The Quad City Times, a local newspaper, as well as a local TV station. These are the two largest media outlets in the area, so this will get some coverage. Hope your vigils were as good as this. We will send a message to the people in charge, even though they are too arrogant to care. Beats doing nothing.
