There are days when the Civic Skinny makes me giggle
NUSSLE WATCH

The Polk County GOP straw poll results from the Iowa State Fairgrounds two weekends ago were barely counted before a buzz started up that, despite Jim Nussle "purchasing 500 tickets" and winning with 64.8 percent of the vote, the Congressman actually received fewer than 400 votes. Why is this important? Because the people who have written Bob Vander Plaats off are pointing to the fact that although Nussle's campaign did make a big logistic push, busing in people from around the state just to vote and leave, he didn't get 500 votes and Vander Plaats looked a lot stronger than he is as a result. "Vander Plaats has a lot of support within the Polk County organization because of its large number of social conservatives," one attendee told us. "Nussle played to them by talking up his support of the Defense of Marriage act, saying 'marriage is between a man and a woman,' but I think a lot of people were rolling their eyes. You guys may be hearing that his screwing his first wife over is a non-issue and he has his bases covered, but he needs to drop it. A lot of Polk County folks think the guy's an asshole already, and now they think he's full of shit, too

1. Vander Plaats
Perhaps Mr. VP will do the Democrat's work by linking Nussle's dirty hands with Delay money. Hopefully Mr. VP will go even farther than that.

I am becoming more and more confident that the Democratic nomination for Governor is the real 2006 race. I hate to be overconfident, but 2006 could be a landscape altering election in many ways.

2. We need more than just the Governor's seat
If the GOP retains the majority in the legislature a Democratic Governor doesn't stand to do much other than protect us from far RW legislation. We need to re-take the State Senate and further erode (or ever take over) the republican majority in the Statehouse.

I still want to see a Democratic Congressman in the 1st and 2nd and retain the 3rd at the very least (Let's not talk about Steve King right now.....aaarrrrgggghhh :grr:)

3. I am right there with ya...
I am hoping VanderPutz knocks a few of Nussle's teeth out in the primary (that is if VP doesn't win outright) by reinforcing the "out of touch" and corrupt view that I think many Iowans are developing. This whole DeLay thing is just icing on the cake.

I don't think VP has a shot in the general election (Lord help us if he does!), which makes our Democratic nominee all that more important.

5. Lol..temporary wins only!
I guess I am hoping for an easier win for our Dems more than any sort of victory for the right wingers.

I think Nussle's name recognition would be a great asset for the R's in the gov race since sadly I think a lot of voters are ill-informed and vote base on names more than ideas and ethics. I would love to match up a solid Dem against VanderPlaats.
