I just got this through email from the Hawkeye Labor Council (AFL-CIO), I am sure everyone is more than welcome to attend.

Debi, I noticed Chet Culver will be there as a candidate for Gov! I thought that would lift your spirits a little.

2. I am about 90% sure I will be able to make this one....
I have another meeting that night, but I am working on rescheduling it to make time for this (and I think I am good to go).

It should be interesting to see some of the candidates interact. I am pretty interested in hearing from the District 1 candidates...being a 2nd District guy I don't really know much about any of them.

I hope to see some of you there!

6. Candidates for Gov.
I wish some of you would have been able to attend, I had a good time and really enjoyed hearing all of the various candidates speak. I took along an ex-girlfriend (now very close friend) who to this point has only been mildly engaged in politics, and it was interesting to hear her point of view.

As far as candidates for governor, Sal Mohammed, Patty Judge, Ed Fallon, and Mike Blouin all spoke. Chet Culver was there early and made his rounds but left before the stump speeches began - something about a prior committment. I was pretty disappointed as I really want to give him the consideration I think he deserves (and I have heard that his stump speech is getting better).

Sal Mohammed, bless the man, spoke mostly about the need for progressive reforms. I admire his ideas, but I think he has a snowball's chance in bush's future residence of being elected. He speaks with a very thick accent. My friend had a very difficult time understanding what he was saying for the majority of his speech. I don't think she was alone. I understood him for the most part because I have close friends that have arabic accents so I am a little used to it, but I can't imagine most corn-fed Iowans would vote for him. He obviously has tremendous passion and courage and I respect the man.

Patty was great. I don't know if it was the woman-power thing, or the fact that she really spoke out about women's rights (an obvious poke at Blouin) but my friend really connected with her and made me go grab some Judge literature. I think she may have found her ticket into activism! Patty seems like a very trustworthy, very caring person. Maybe I was influenced by my friend's enthusiasm, but I liked her.

Ed Fallon was a little more fiery than I had ever seen him. Not necessarily confrontational, but the good majority of his speech was about how we should rely on 'electability' and 'economic development' in its current sense. He equated 'economic development' with reaganomics, or trickle-down economics. Again, it seemed most of his speech was directed towards Blouin, and I think he too may have mentioned woman's rights.

When Blouin started speaking we went over to get a refill on the drinks and we were talking with some of the organizers, then decided to go have cigarette, so I didn't hear much of what he had to say except a bit on him touting his record of economic development (it IS rather extensive). Blouin by far had the most stickers being worn in the hall. I don't think my friend was real interested in a lot of what he was saying after I told her he was anti-choice. She did say that he seemed to be the only one that "looked" like a politician, which she said may or may not be a good thing.

I am still undecided. Balancing electability, economic development, progressive/grassroots change, and personal stances on woman's rights has been and still is a tough one. Ugh.

10. Missed Ya!
Yeah, it's too bad you couldn't make it, but I completely understand about working late!

I was probably more disappointed than you would have been that Culver didn't speak, I was very interested in hearing what he had to say. I feel like Blouin's support is snowballing faster and bigger and I wanted to hear him out before he was pushed out of the way!

You and your hubby will have to come down this way for something else soon...or let me know when something is going on up yonder!

8. Support
Let me ask, come next year are any of you willing to endorse the Republican candidate, regardless who it is, if your democratic candidate is not on the ticket. I know my answer? Come 2006 I will be working for the democrat at the head of the ticket with positive input.

9. That's a simple question...
I would bet my left pinky toe that anyone on this board...oh wait, there is one newer addition that I MIGHT not trust with my toe...will vote for the Democratic nominee.

That surely doesn't take away from the fact that some of us are excited about one candidate over another. That is, in fact, the reason for caucus/primaries.

I talked in depth about this to my friend last night after we talked about Blouin and his anti-abortion stance.. Yeah, Blouin is anti-abortion, and it is a hard pill to swallow, but would I rather have an anti-abortion Dem, or an anti-abortion Repub?

Not a tough choice.

12. And welcome to DU!
When I said there was a recent visitor who I wasn't quite ready to trust to vote for any Dem, it wasn't you.

No offense meant to anyone, by any means.

15. No offense taken
I have been around since last October. I wanted to see how like minded people were thinking about the election and found DU through
Common Dreams or Daily Kos following links. Don't know which one got me here. No telling where you might end up following links.

I don't post much, but do slip in when I feel I have something to add. I do read the Iowa section every time I sit down to the computer. I started blogging on Keokuk.com, my hometown. Am living in CR now, but always will be from Keokuk.

I am of the thought that local elections and state election are as important to win as the national elections. Most people ignore these elections. They are not aware of how the Congressional Districts are drawn out. It is important that by 2010 we have a Democratically controlled legislature in Iowa, along with a strong democratic governor. Then maybe we can be proud of what we send to Washington to represent us.

I go back to when Mesevinski (sp?) represented the first district and Clark was our senator. It was a sad day in Iowa politics when we lost these two, along with Senator Culver. To be replaced by Jepson and later Grassly.

16. Great!
I am even more happy to have you here, considering I am just a young buck who can only recall Harkin and Grassley, Branstedt and Vilsack. I am democratically principled, but not very democratically experienced!

I welcome your wisdom and past experience!

You said you are from CR, will you be at Kingston on Sunday to see Kerry and support Justin Shields for city council?

17. It gets worse
I can remember when Harold Hughes was governor. I was in junior high when he was elected to the senate. I graduated in 1972, Only 33 short years ago. I lived through 30 years of Ray and Bransted and was thrilled to death when we elected Vilsack and Clinton in the same decade. A lot of frustration state wide and nationally.

I want to go, but depends on how cold it is, how I feel and how far I have to walk.
