"Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar"
"Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar"

In solidarity with many other peace and justice groups throughout the nation, WFPI will commemorate and mourn the death of our 2,000 soldiers killed in Iraq. The U.S. body count is now at 1988 and still growing, so we anticipate this announcement to be broadcast in the next few days. We will mark this terrible cost of war by holding a solemn candlelight vigil on the day after the tv or radio announcement is made. Please watch the news, and join us the next evening.

Where: Green Square Park, downtown Cedar Rapids (3rd Avenue and 5th street)
When: 7 pm, the evening after the announcement is made
*Names of the dead will be read and honored.

1. Hopefully,it'll never come
If nobody else dies over there, thats a good thing. But alas, no.2000 will probably arrive sooner rather than later. Thanks for the info.

9. I attended an event in Marshalltown
There was 7 people in attendance. We had candles and some signs that said "bring the troops home" and "no more deaths, no more lies." It was a pretty positive event.

10. We had a fair turnout in Cedar Rapids tonight
Several people were there when I arrived (30 or so) and more came after I did. A core group of about 30 stayed for the entire reading of names. (Roughly two hours)

I did discover something tonight following the vigil. I was speaking about the Iowa House issue (voting paper trails) and a few people came up to me for more information. One woman asked if there was an organized effort in Iowa dealing primarily with elections. I told her that I wasn't sure and then she asked where I received most of my elections news, especially dealing with Iowa. I told her the internet and she wanted specifics.

Any other time DU would have been one of the first sites out of my mouth. Tonight it was not. As I drove home I searched for the reason why I didn't say DU... I'm embarrassed. I couldn't look at this nice, older woman and send her to swim with the sharks here.

I guess I could have qualified it by telling her to come here and head straight for the Iowa forum (because I definitely don't find those of you in this particular forum to be attack oriented).

I'm headed off to bed now because I think I need to decide if I want to continue to associate myself with a community of which I'm embarrassed to be a part.

12. That was you!
You gave out some very good information tonight. I had to leave pretty quickly after we were done reading names, but I smiled as I walked past you because you were so well-versed. You were gathering quite a few interested people!

Peace grows (plant seeds),

Maggie

13. DU
I just read your post and noticed the last part of your post about being embarassed to recommend DU to strangers...

I have to say that I can sympathize with that reaction, but I hope it doesn't cause you to quit posting here! Sometimes DU can be a bit much...between some of the tinfoil hatters, the visciousness that comes with anonymity, and those the refuse to see another's point of view it can give you quite a headache if you let it. But where else can a group of mostly like-minded people blow off steam while reading the latest headlines and share strategies for taking back the leadership of our country?

I realize DU isn't for everyone, but I hope its still for you!
