1st District congressional candidate drops out

David Overby, the retired newspaper editor who proposed a revamp of the nation’s tax code and a reduction in U.S. armed forces to pre-World War II levels, said Wednesday that he is dropping out of the race for Congress in Iowa’s 1st District.

Overby, who lives in Peosta, said his campaign isn’t breaking through and he decided to end it because of worries the crowded race for the Democratic nomination would go to a special convention if the primary winner didn’t get enough votes to win outright.

Overby, who was an editor in Charles City, Iowa, might have been the most provocative of the candidates in the race. He published a 48-page manifesto called “The Little Green Book” that set out ideas for revamping the tax code, eliminating property taxes and income-tax exemptions, nationalizing railroad beds and cutting troop levels.

1. Expected, but...
I know he didn't have a chance, but its sad when the most unique candidate drops out and leaves the others that are more similar.

I like having those controversial and new ideas thrown out there sometimes. Too bad some of them never catch on.

3. Dave is on the Central Committee here in Dubuque.
His main reason for running was to get his ideas out there and make them part of the discussion. He knew going in that he didn't have much of a chance but he accomplished what he wanted to do.
