Anyone watching the Sec. of Ag race?
THere are two Democrats running:

Dusky Terry (son of Dixon Terry) who has worked for Vilsack since he started running for Governor back in 1998, and Denise O'Brien who I'm sorry to say I don't know much about other than where she's from. Anyone got any more information?

Candidates split on requiring ethanol

<snip>

The secretary should support water quality and soil conservation efforts, boost enterprises that add value to Iowa crops, and promote the use of renewable fuels, Terry said.

Denise O'Brien of Atlantic, also a Democrat, said she would bring rural and urban residents together to look at ideas for Iowa's food and farming sector.

<snip>

Terry said he favored an ethanol mandate. Leonard said he was not in favor of an ethanol mandate and preferred using a marketing program rather than a mandate to make Iowa the energy capital of the world.

O'Brien said she hadn't reached a conclusion on the need for an ethanol mandate, but she did favor granting incentives for renewable fuels.

1. I think Dixon would roll over in his grave . . .
I think Dixon Terry would roll over in his grave if he saw the corporate ag takeover of Iowa that his son aided and abetted as a policy wonk in the Vilsack Administration. Dusky is a nice guy, but Denise O'Brien is more like his father. I'm going to support an activist for family sized sustainable farms rather than a son who forgot his Dad's passion.

2. Well, we'll be on opposite sides of the primary
But, of course, either one of them will do better than a republican 'cheerleader' for farmers.

Dusky has been a family friend for years and my husband was close to his father, for that reason we already pledged our support to his campaign.

I can't imagine the Sec. of Ag race getting messy...can you?
